  1. ed, I kind of agree with you. I am in Dubai at the moment and just today I commented that the rich Arabs could surely make better use of their money helping mal-nourished children and providing shelter for homeless people than buying x number of expensive cars, watches etc.

However, in Rafa’s case he does work so hard and he does his bit for the needy so I will give him some slack.

      • ^^ I’m reminded of the photo shoot that Rafa did last year for the Spanish version of Vanity Fair. He had to wear a tuxedo for the shoot and most of the time he walked around in his socks, explaining that dress shoes hurt his feet. When he finally put on the shoes they gave him, he commented that he was surprised that they didn’t hurt his feet and wanted to know the brand (I’ve forgotten now) so that he could buy a pair. I’ve noticed he pretty much has two pairs of dress shoes, a black pair and a brown pair, and they look like the shoes that are made by the high end shoemaker. All of his other shoes are Nikes, also specially made for him, or flip flops, or those moccasin looking shoes that he’s worn forever. I’m guessing that his having his dress shoes specially made was specifically because of his foot issues and not just a desire to be fashionable. And yes, they are hideously expensive, but most custom shoes are.

      • ^^Thank you @jpacnw for a nice perspective, makes eminent sense. Regardless, I feel Rafa does not have to justify how he spends his money to anybody, he is not a scrounger.

I also have noticed, mostly, the brown shoes in most of the pictures where he is wearing formal dress. I think I have commented once how nice they are.

    • Don’t forget the Queen @nadline. She doesn’t need all those palaces and castles, does she?

My point is, the rich will always be with us…………….

  2. ^^He just recently bought it. He had the Aston Martin for 6 years, so I guess it was time for a new sports car. I find it amusing that he drives a high powered car given that, by all accounts, he’s a very cautious and slow driver.

    • @jpacnw,

I thought he still had the Aston Martin. So now it appears that Rafa has decided to get a new sports car. The Ferrari is really something else, built for speed. I wonder if Rafa would ever really let the car go all out!

  3. Oh Dear!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have just returned from Dubai, timed so that I could watch Canada followed by Cincy. I don’t know what to say. 🙂

  4. Oh no. What horrible bad luck. He must be really cut up to miss these two important tourneys. Doesn’t bode well for the USO either 🙁

And of course it puts paid to any hope of reclaiming No.1 this year.

“More specifically, tests found “a small detachment of posterior sheath of the right ulnar wrist” in Nadal. Immobilization (cast) 2-3 weeks.”

  6. Totally gutted, for Rafa and for me. For Rafa because he is suffering another injury set-back. I hope it is not serious and he can recover fully. For me because as usual, I has arranged my schedule for the next 2 weeks around Rafa-tennis! Watching tennis without Rafa is torture……………..

    Get well soon Rafa, Vamos!!

  7. What an annus horribilis 2014 has been for Rafa. Such a contrast to the smooth sailing 2013.

    C’est dommage………………

  8. It sounds rather as though this injury happened before he got to Toronto………

“”I was planning on coming to Toronto and did everything I could to be ready but I still need some more time to recover.”

Why the heck did they see fit to feature Rafa’s recent Wimbledon loss? Why not run a picture of him winning the Toronto trophy last year. doh!

That’s what the Federazzi is doing.

  9. Next to impossible to return for USO with zero preparation.

No time to strengthen arm/wrist once cast is removed.

I’ll have to back the young guns and Muzza for the hard court season. Glad we didn’t invest in tickets to Rogers Cup this year.

    Get well Rafa!

  10. Very gutted and sad to read this. I cant believe the amount of bad luck Rafa is facing with injuries. This year he has had injuries with back and wrist- both newer for him.

  11. This is awful news…I was tentatively plannng on going to NYC…won’t bother now. And how do you injure your wrist in practice?!?!? just terrible and sad.

  12. “a small detachment of posterior sheath of the right ulnar wrist”

This to me sounds like an injury which was a long time in the making and came to a head during practice yesterday. I would be very, very surprised if Rafa turns up at Flushing Meadows. Not worth it, imo. Btter for him to rest up, get the wrist fully healed and then start rehabilitation to get the strength back……….

    Vamos Champ!

    • agree…I rather see a healthy rafa returning for the indoor season than one going out in the early rounds at the USO.

  13. Thank goodness I did not book Cincinnati or the Flushing meadows tickets! No fun without Rafa! Get well soon, champ and come back strong!!

  14. I came here to read this sad news. I really feel for Rafa. This has been such a tough year for him. First the back and then the wrist.

I am just at a loss for words right now. I was so looking forward to seeing him in Toronto.

  15. Trust Rafa! We are all worried about this latest injury set-back and Rafa is worried about having to change his watch placement because of the cast! I think this is a good sign, mentally he is okay. He is continuing with his practice, cast in place:

This is what Dr, Cotorro had to say,

“He hadn’t had a wrist injury before. Recovery time is between 2 & 3 weeks. Main thing is to heal well”
“It’s too soon to [be able to] say if Rafa’ll be ready or not for the US Open”
“This type of injuries don’t allow U to force. You have to stop&recover. Otherwise U can have major problems”
“Obviously, Rafa is a bit down right now. The injury has come in a really bad time of the season”
Apparently, Rafa felt an acute pain after hitting a BH & decided to look for cause immediately, as the sooner the injury’s treated the better
Besides the previous quotes, Dr Cotorro has said the injury is not chronic, but acute, as Rafa hadn’t had discomfort before.

  16. unbelievable…I can not find the words to express how disappointed I am…I was so looking forward to seeing Rafa back on court again…I was also so encouraged by his enthusiasm at practice sessions…What a bad luck for our Rafa…I am sad…I am so sad…
