“In the meantime, he has kept a copy of his fourth-round win on his cell phone, watching it once in a while for motivation.

“It’s just good for confidence and when you’re sitting around just analyze how you played, and all that sort of stuff. I don’t go looking on YouTube and watching myself play, but when I just want something to do it’s always an option.”

That includes his between-the-legs winner against Nadal, which was featured in highlight reels and has prompted him to go for more shots like that while practicing. “Yeah, the boys have noticed that I’m going for more trick shots and stuff now, and they’re starting to, as well,” he said.’

    No commentary needed…………….

“As luxury-goods companies such as LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA struggle to reconcile their global presence with an exclusive cachet, the shoemaker to tennis champ Rafael Nadal says it’s benefiting from being small.

Sales of Corthay shoes, which can cost more than $10,000 for a bespoke pair, are growing β€œvery strongly’” as wealthy shoppers increasingly seek rare and refined products, said Xavier De Royere, the closely held company’s chief executive officer.

Prices of ready-to-wear models such as the Casanova Oxford start from about $1,500. The company has about 500 clients for its bespoke footwear, including Nadal and actors Clive Owen and Cate Blanchett.”

Treat yourself, Rafa, you’ve earned and deserve every penny. All that suffering on court, those rivers of sweat, yes, spoil yourself.

*Wish I could say the same for those nasty, crooked City bankers……..*

  3. Sorry to be po-faced but no matter how rich someone is there is something obscene about forking out that kind of money for a pair of shoes just because you can.

I find it hard to believe Rafa is a paying client – he has never been a conspicuous spender.

    • @ed251137, remember: Rafa has a congenital foot deformity so he needs specially made shoes. His court shoes are specially designed for him for this condition so I reckon he needs the same service for his off-court wear.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone spending THEIR money on whatever trinket catches their fancy, or how much that trinket costs, as long as it’s honestly begotten loot. Honestly, I couldn’t care less. Rafa has earned his loot honestly, and then some.

My own philosophy is: if you earn your money honestly, spend it on yourself or give it away to charity. No handouts to lazy off-spring and/or relatives.

What I cannot abide is conspicuous spending by thieves. City bankers and politicians come to mind in this respect.

      • Having said that, I don’t think Rafa will be amused by the publicity.

@ed251137, Rafa drives a Ferrari to practice, he wears a half a million dollars worth of watch ON COURT (Okay, he doesn’t pay for it, but still…….), so Rafa likes his trinkets, like any normal person I might add. He is not flashy (thank goodness) but that is not surprising. He was born into money, he is not nouveau riche so you won’t see him “blinging” it around……….

    • I didn’t know he drove a Ferrari. It conjures up a delicious image of him nosing cautiously around the Mallorcan lanes in in a powerful sports car when in fact (as his sister has revealed) he is actually quite a timid driver.

  4. Have just read the article more carefully. The headline is deliberately misleading, implying they are supplying Rafa with shoes costing $10,000. Their prices actually start from $1,500 which is reasonable for bespoke shoes. RITB is right: Rafa deserves to molly coddle his feet when he’s not playing tennis – as long as they haven’t cost the prices of a family car!

  5. The headline of the articles sets out to mislead by implying Rafa buys $10,000 shoes.
Their starting price is from $1,500 which is not unreasonable for bespoke shoes. I just cannot square Rafa with someone coughing up the price of a family car on a pair of shoes.

  6. If Rafans paid closer attention to what he says they could stop obsessing about his ranking He has always maintained he is not fussed about being No.1 – unlike Federer who hated it when he lost his ranking to Rafa in 2008 and asked that he was not introduced on court as No.2!!!!
