Zero surprise that Murray and Lendl have parted. It was a very effective team, but tension in camp lately was palpable

Frankly, not entirely surprised. Andy a bit distant in IW last week. Lendl wanting to travel less. Hard to replicate Wimbledon achievement.

  2. I came on here to read the news about Andy and Lendl parting ways. I am shocked, to say the least. I hope that Andy can find someone at least on an interim basis so that he can continue with the great progress he has made as a player.

On the tennis channel yesterday in the evening, Justin Gimelstob had a wonderful interview with Andy. I learned so much about him. He was positively delightful and forthcoming. It was a great insight into a young man who doesn’t normally show his emotions. Fascinating and informative.

  3. deucy,

I don’t know when it was recorded. I only happened to see it because I was channel surfing. I learned so much about Andy from that interview. He said how his Mom always taught her children to just enjoy playing tennis. He also mentioned his father, who has been supportive of him. I am trying to remember what I can because it was truly wonderful to watch Andy in this way. He really is so likeable when you just sit down and chat with him.

I remember one of the last questions Gimelstob asked Andy was how he would like to be remembered after his career is over. He said that he would like to be remembered as someone who reached his potential. I thought that was a brilliant answer. It says it all. Because for so long many thought he wouldn’t get there. Now I am recalling more. He did talk about how he was able to bounce back from the loss in the 2012 Wimbledon final. Gimelstob asked me how he was able to come back when he had so much trouble after past losses in slam finals. He said that this time he believed that he played his best and gave a good account of himself.

Andy was thoughtful and articulate. I found him incredibly engaging. I didn’t see the whole interview, because I tuned in late. I wonder if they are going to show it again. But I am very happy that I stumbled upon it, because I saw a very different side of Andy.

I hope that what I remembered gave you some idea of what it was like. I was quite impressed.

    Andy is very articulate

    • Thank you for letting us know what he said, nny
I remember only one more detailed interview with Andy from a few years ago. Then too he was down to earth, relaxed, candid and with no ego.

  4. Sorry, but I had some mistakes in my last post. Of course I meant to say that Andy talked about how HE was able to bounce back after the loss in the 2012 Wimbledon final.

Then the line at the bottom was something I thought I had erased. So it’s just a repeat.

  5. I think Andy should appoint his mum who will stay with him until he retires. Judy knows all about the technique and Andy will refrain from shouting at his team when things are not going his way.

  6. Carefully looking at the statements issued by both Lendl and Andy, it seems to me that the decision to split was Lendl’s. I don’t believe it was because Lendl wants to devote himself to his business interests or that he wants to play more. He could still have done all those things and played some part in Andy’s team. He was displeased about something. I suppose eventually when Andy writes his auto, the truth will come out.

Looking back, we see that Lendl brought two important changes. He made Andy work on his forehand so that he had a good attacking weapon. And he made Andy more calm on court.
Fed has mentioned how he (Fed) was such a brat earlier but he learnt to keep his emotions under check. The lesson for Rafa was instilled early by Uncle T. Borg was so cool on court, he was called Iceborg. It is clear that one of the most important things which Lendl brought was making Andy keep a tight rein on his emotions and focus instead on the job at hand . But it also seemed sometimes that when Lendl was not there Andy reverted to yelling at his box. The important step which Andy has to take now is to impose the discipline on himself instead of needing Lendl to check his self destructive emotions.
He needs to work on his second serve and continue working on developing a more attacking mindset focusing on the game. Not waste any emotional energy attacking himself.

  7. Could you believe that as a boy Borg was so hot headed that he was excluded from his local tennis club for 6 months in Sweden? His parents were told to keep him way until he learnt to behave himself. That’s when he became IceBorg.

  8. Borg said that he didn’t cease to feel strong emotions during matches and elsewhere, but he learned to not show them.

    • ^^^^
This is correct. I remember Borg talking about it in the wonderful documentary McEnroe/Borg: Fire and Ice. He said that he still had so many emotions boiling inside him, but would never show them on court after being disciplined and kicked out of the Swedish tennis club for those six months. That had a big impact on him.

“Murray on split with Lendl: it’s a tough 1 for me, he’s been a big part of my life, big part of my team. He made huge difference 2 my tennis”

  10. Cahill was watching Andy’s match. He stepped in last time. Hope he can act as an interim coach again, don’t want Andy making any hasty decisions.
Perhaps Magnus Norman could be persuaded…;)

    • deucy,

I think it would be a great idea if Cahill stepped in as an interim coach. Andy knows him and there is a familiarity and hopefully a comfort level between them.

I also agree with you about Andy not making any hasty decisions. He took his time to hire Lendl. I hope he does the same thing now.

  11. It’s a tricky decision for the guys with a large entourage to find someone who fits in with the rest of the team as well. Ruffled feathers in the the camp can only be a distraction. One does wonder how Nole’s large team felt about the buffoon BB in their midst!

  12. It is raining cats and dogs in Naples and they say it might go on for 48 hours. This works well for Andy as he is recovering from a virus. They might have to extend play to Monday to finish the tie.

  13. Inglot was really interesting about the way Andy plays on clay. He said Andy uses his core strength to hit shots, so he has to rotate his whole body in order to hit.. Coming off back surgery and not yet fully fit, Inglot suggested Andy’s core is still weak. In contrast Foggy and Rafa use their shoulders and wrists. This gives them far more flexibility on shots, as well as being far less energy draining. That makes sense to me as Rafa has amazing biceps but his body is comparatively unmuscled, while Andy’s looks like the proverbial washboard.
I noticed Foggy, using wristy clicks and flicks could change direction at the last minute and was constantly out foxing Andy, who does not move well on clay anyway.
Makes me think the quarters at RG are the very, very best showing Andy fans could hope for.

  14. I heard somewhere that Andy wants to have a coach by the time RG rolls around. I am trying to remember exactly where I heard that, whether it was on the tennis channel or on some other tennis site.

Andy has had some really good results on clay. I believe that his best result at RG was the semi a few years ago, where he was defeated by Rafa. I think if his back is okay and he can get into some good form, he has a reasonable shot to get a good result at RG. It would be good for him if he could at least make it to the quarterfinals because he can only gain points since he didn’t play last year.

Andy looked the best I have seen him in Miami since he returned to playing. He was starting to look more like himself. He even gave Novak a bit of a match, but just didn’t have his fitness and the legs to move well enough or hang with him at that point. The key is that he stays healthy.
