Montreal R2 preview and prediction: Alcaraz vs. Paul

No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz will make his Montreal Masters debut against American Tommy Paul on Wednesday.

Carlos Alcaraz is still a teenager. At age 19, he has enjoyed a meteoric rise to world No. 4. The Spaniard has won four titles so far in 2022, although he did most of his damage during the spring hard-court and clay-court swings. He hasn’t pocketed any trophies since the Madrid Masters in May, but he still manages to get to the business end of most tournaments he enters.

Tommy Paul has steadily been making his way back up the rankings. The American is the world No. 34 with good showings in Atlanta–where he made the quarters–and Wimbledon with a round of 16 showing. He earned no rankings points for his Wimbledon results, though, as the ATP elected to not award points for this year’s event due to their decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus.

This is the first meeting between Paul and Alcaraz. While the Spaniard elected to return to his preferred clay following the grass-court season, Paul has been playing on hards in North America. Still, while Alcaraz is perhaps more comfortable on clay, he is also a fine hard-court player. And he’s young enough that he should have enough left in the tank, even after his post-Wimbledon activity.

  1. Yep. It’s a surprise…certainly an upset…but Tommy Paul really was outstanding today. Clutch in the big moments, fantastic movement…just all around impressive win from the American.
