Main-draw action in the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament gets underway on Tuesday afternoon at Flushing Meadows, with the semifinals and final to follow on Wednesday night.
In the second year of this revamped competition, the field is once again stacked. Among the singles players participating are Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Carlos Alcaraz, Serena Williams, Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula, Learner Tien, Amanda Anisimova, Jakub Mensik, Karolina Muchova, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alexandra Eala, Gael Monfils, and Elina Svitolina.
Unfortunately for the aforementioned stars of the game, they won’t have an easy time advancing in the draw. That’s because there are plenty of doubles specialists battling for the title, including defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Other formidable pairings include Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten, Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool, and Kristina Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo. Sabalenka and Djokovic may be the top seeds, but they won’t even be favored in their opening match against Siniakova and Patten.
From round one through the semis, matches will be best-of-three sets with short sets to four games with no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at 4-4, and a 10-point super-tiebreaker for the third. The final will be best-of-three sets with no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at 6-6, and a 10-point super-tiebreaker for the third.
Quarterfinal picks: Siniakova and Patten over Eala and Auger-Aliassime, Routliffe and Glasspool over Townsend and Zverev, Mladenovic and Arevalo over Anisimova and Tien, and Errani and Vavassori over Pegula and Fritz
Semifinals: Siniakova and Patten over Routliffe and Glasspool and Errani and Vavassori over Mladenovic and Arevalo
Final: Errani and Vavassori over Siniakova and Patten
