Montreal R2 preview and prediction: Medvedev vs. Kyrgios

Reigning U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev will take on Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in a blockbuster second-round match in Montreal.

(1) Daniil Medvedev vs. Nick Kyrgios

In a match that would be a worthy Grand Slam final, world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios will clash in the second round of the Montreal Masters. This situation owing to the ATP’s decision to not award ranking points for this year’s Wimbledon Championships because the All-England Club banned players from Russia and Belarus. Kyrgios, the Wimbledon runner-up, came away with prize money a-plenty and heaps of prestige…but no ranking points. He is, therefore, not seeded and landed right in Medvedev’s way.

Of course, an argument could be made that it’s Medvedev who is the unlucky one of this pair. His No. 1 ranking is supposed to protect him from Wimbledon finalists in the second round…but here we are: a blockbuster on Day 3 of action.

These two are not strangers to each other, as they have played three other times. Medvedev won their last encounter at this year’s at the Australian Open. It was the only significant early loss of his entire season, which has otherwise been outstanding. Kyrgios won their other two matches–one on hard courts and one on clay.

Kyrgios will be looking for conditions to dry and warm up on Wednesday. Cool, rainy conditions will mute the Kyrgios serve and give Medvedev time to frustrate the Aussie. The forecast calls for 24 degrees C and mostly sunny. Medvedev should be able to frustrate Kyrgios enough to get a set, but look for the Aussie to come away with a sort-of-but-not-quite upset.

    • I’ve got Sinner getting to the final, beaten by Med., ho. ho. But look at Draper! Commies were raving about him at Wimbledon, but I just thought, “Oh that’s the BRITISH commentators!”

  1. I did think about Sinner but has to play Tsitsipas. Not that he in great form but hard to judge at this time of year.
Yeah the British presenters/commies love the Draper kind of story.Ususlly a kid with a hard luck story who is the next Tim Hennan.
All in all my brackets pretty crap .Took some risky picks like Jenson over RBA and Tiafoe over Fritz.
