World Tour Finals player profile: Roger Federer

Season in review: After turning 32 years old during the 2013 campaign and compiling just a 45-17 record while winning nothing more than one 250-point title, Federer was thought to be on the decline heading into 2014. Think again. Although he did not capture a major for a second straight season, Federer lifted five winner’s trophies (two of the Masters 1000 variety) and reached at least the semis of three Grand Slams–including the Wimbledon final. The 33-year-old still has a mathematical chance to finish No. 1 in the world.

Aside from an unexpectedly routine loss to Marin Cilic in the U.S. Open semifinals, Federer has been consistently outstanding since the tour returned to hard courts this summer. He finished runner-up in Toronto, won Cincinnati, and this fall has snagged titles in Shanghai and Basel. The six-time World Tour Finals champion still has the Davis Cup final to play after London concludes.

Quotable: “Whether I am No. 1 at the end of this year or one or two weeks later next year, it doesn’t really matter. Novak seems to be fit, anyway. I will have good preparation for London. I can handle [the rigors of the World Tour Finals] quite easily, especially with nine days off. In London, I have a minimum of three matches to play and up to five; it’s not a lot. And I do not have a particular injury or problem. I am confident.”
