Carlos Alcaraz was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for 2025 earlier this week. Other nominees for the award were Jannik Sinner, soccer star Ousmane Dembele, pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, motorcyclist Marc Marquez, and cyclist Tadej Pogacar.
Novak Djokovic was a co-host for the event alongside Olympic slope-style skier Eileen Gu.
Alcaraz won the French Open and U.S. Open in 2025, while Sinner triumphed at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The Italian, however, missed three months of the season due to a suspension.
Alcaraz is currently sidelined with a wrist injury. The second-ranked Spaniard withdrew from the Barcelona tournament prior to round two and is also missing the Madrid Masters. His participation at the Rome Masters and Roland Garros is in doubt.
He posted the following on social media to announce his exit from Madrid: “There are some news that are incredibly hard to share. Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row. It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon ❤️”.
