U.S. Open sectional qualifying preview and pick: Redfoo vs. either Gray or Dumlupinar

Stefan Gordy, commonly known as “Redfoo,” will kick off his bid in U.S. Open sectional qualifying when he takes the court on Wednesday. Redfoo, who was given a first-round bye in the 23-man field, awaits either Scott Gray or Mahmut Dumlupinar.

Don’t laugh. LMFAO’s lead man means business on the tennis court.

Redfoo will be the headline-maker when play begins at Northern California Sectional Qualifying in the U.S. Open National Playoffs on Wednesday in Salinas, California. Granted an opening-round bye, 37-year-old from Pacific Palisades, CA will kick off his campaign against either Scott Gray of Turlock, CA or Mahmut Dumlupinar of Monterey, CA.

The boyfriend of current WTA world No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, Redfoo is no slouch himself with racket in hand. A former junior player, he most recently competed at the BNP Paribas Showdown in New York City in early March. Redfoo struggled with his serve against Serena Williams, but he should not have to go for quite as much with that shot against either Gray or Dumlupinar. The veteran has also demonstrated impressive hand-eye coordination and a powerful forehand on the ping-pong table, attributes that should carry over to the tennis court.

Gray, meanwhile, was a one-star recruit out of Turlock High School. His team won three straight Central California Conference singles championships and Gray was the first Turlock player to capture three consecutive Central California Conference singles titles. Now playing at Fresno City College, the 2012 high school graduate has done well to overcome an elbow injury that plagued his senior season at THS.

Dumlupinar played at the 4.5 level during 2012 USTA competition in Monterey, CA. He was last registered at a 4.0 level in 2013.

Pick: Redfoo in 3
