I’ve gone for Thiem this year.
He’s obviously one of the best clay courters in the world today, and surely it’s only a matter of time before he wins RG, as long as he remains fit.
Nadal’s reign will have to end at some point, and at age 25 it could well be Thiem’s year.
Forgot to add: the odds on Thiem winning RG have gotten significantly shorter since I placed my bet back in March.
On the numbers, Fed remains the best bet of the top guys. 25-1 is nothing to sniff at, and it’s a bit ridiculous that Zverev is considered a better bet to win it given his current form and his track record at slams.
I’m not sure you can say that RG has been Nadal’s best tournament. It’s obviously one of them, and of course the most famous. But he’s been just as good at Monte Carlo and Barcelona -until this year. That doesn’t bode well for his chances in Paris, in my opinion.
Nadal still the favourite cause it’s BO5, but I have Thiem next to him, who’s very close at this point.
It’s a bit hard to tell with Djoko at the moment, he was on fire at the AO but hasn’t done much since. Is it that he’s only preparing properly for the slams, or is it a serious downturn in form that may continue into the FO?
Thiem seems to improve incrementally year on year, and imo he is now the 2nd best player on clay. That being said, there are always the particularities of individual match-ups, and Djokovic may still stand a better chance on clay against Rafa if they meet. If Rafa can get a win in versus Djoko before the FO, that’d certainly be beneficial for his confidence after the AO drubbing.
With Fed it’s more interesting just to see what happens after 3 years out. That may help his mindset, although in any case it’s a tough, physical grind on clay.
Zeverev – not holding my breath.
I also like Thiem….it’s his time. Roger could get to quarters, but 3 out of 5 on clay is just too much strain on a 37 year old body. Rafa also in quarters or semis, but 7 matches are just too many to win in 2 weeks.
Rafa remains a question mark. Currently he has a nasty stomach bug. If he recovers from that it may leave him more vulnerable to injury. 🙁
Thiem is looking like a solid contender but he’s never been that consistent at his very impressive top level.
Djokovic? Who knows. He’ll certanly be motivated.
Zverev has really been struggling this year – don’t see him making any kind of run, plus he’s never done well at any slam.
Roger? H’mmm – 37 isn’t too old, maybe, if all the others fall apart. Connors made a run at 39 at the USO. So did Rosewall. Tennis is more physical now though and Roger hasn’t played on clay in 3 years. He’s had by far the most consistent year thus far.
