Sinner holds off Rune, saves Djokovic at Nitto ATP Finals

Jannik Sinner knocked down Novak Djokovic at the Nitto ATP Finals on Tuesday.

Two days later, Sinner lifted Djokovic off the canvas.

Sinner’s 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Holger Rune on Thursday night gave the 22-year-old Italian a perfect 3-0 record in round-robin play while also sending the 36-year-old through to the semifinals. Had Rune defeated Sinner, the Dane would have extended his stay in Turin whereas Djokovic would have been eliminated.

Djokovic edged Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-1 during the afternoon session, leaving himself at the mercy of the Sinner-Rune result because he dropped a set. But Sinner’s success ended up saving the world No. 1.

There could be similar drama in the Red Group on Friday, as both Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev still have a chance to join Daniil Medvedev in the semis. Alcaraz advances with either a win over Medvedev or a Zverev loss to Andrey Rublev.
