Schwartzman clinches last spot in Nitto ATP Finals

The 2020 Nitto ATP Finals field is set.

There was one spot remaining prior to the start of this week’s Rolex Paris Masters, and Diego Schwartzman always had the inside track to it. Pablo Carreno Busta was the Argentine’s last challenger still left heading into Friday’s quarterfinals, and his chances ended with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Rafael Nadal. With that, Schwartzman officially clinched a debut appearance in the year-end championship.

The Argentine may have gotten some help from Nadal on Friday, but it’s not like he’s needed much of it over the past two seasons. An impressive 2019 campaign put him in position (players have been able to keep many of those points due to the impact COVID-19 has had on the ATP rankings format) and he has gotten even better in 2020. Schwartzman finished runner-up at the Rome Masters, made a run to the French Open semis, reached another final in Cologne, and made it to the quarters on the indoor hard courts of Paris.

The world No. 9 took to social media when it became official.

Also in the London field are Nadal, Medvedev, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Andrey Rublev. Only Rublev and Schwartzman are first-time qualifiers.
