Rain potentially saves Djokovic at Wimbledon, roof again helps Federer

Only time will tell, but another rain delay at Wimbledon on Friday may end up extending Novak Djokovic’s reign.

Trailing Sam Querrey two sets to none, Djokovic–playing on a roofless Court 1–saw the heavens open up with more precipitation to postpone the remainder of their third-round showdown from Friday to Saturday. Querrey holds owns a stunning 7-6(6), 6-1 advantage heading into the resumption of play scheduled for noon.

The delay may be just what the doctor ordered for the two-time defending champion, but Roger Federer needed no such stroke of good fortune.

Thanks to being scheduled on Centre Court for a third consecutive match, Federer can sleep easily on Friday night and Saturday morning. Whereas one second-round tilt (Alexander Zverev vs. Mikhail Youzhny) has yet to be completed, Federer is the first and only man through to round four. The world No. 3 took rolled over Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 under the closed roof to secure his spot in the second week.

Federer cracked 11 aces without double-faulting and broke serve six times to coast in one hour and 26 aces.

“I’m clearly very happy because, well, the goal was to get to the second week somehow,” said the 34-year-old Swiss, whose form had been question following a French Open withdrawal and early exits in Stuttgart and Halle. “Now I won nine straight sets, which is great. Plus with the wet weather that we’ve seen, the opponents that I had, (you’re) never quite sure. But I was favored if I would be feeling 100 percent, great, yes, you would maybe expect that. But I didn’t know for myself where I was, so I am happy where I am now.

“I’m really pleased of how actually my level has gone up, how round by round I’ve been able to play better. Yeah, I’ve gotten through this tough first week in terms of weather.”
FedGrass
“Obviously everyone dreams about playing Federer on Centre Court,” Evans added. “Two Brits (also Marcus Willis in round two) got a chance this year. Should be inspiration for a lot of people. It’s inspiration for me that I got a chance to play him. I want that again, to play other good players on those courts.”

Of course, Evans should have said two Brits “so far” have gotten to play against the 17-time major winner, because Andy Murray vs. Federer remains a potential title match. And with Djokovic down two sets to love as we speak, Murray vs. Federer has suddenly become somewhere between possible and probable.

  1. I am shocked! It’s one thing to think that Novak would not win Wimbledon, but nobody could have foreseen him losing in the third round to Querrey. All credit to Querrey for getting the huge upset! He kept it together despite all the rain delays.

Novak has already done something the neither Fed ot Rafa was able to do. I don’t know if there was some kind of letdown after finally winning RG.

This is a huge break for Fed. He has a chance to get to the final. Novak’s part of the draw has opened up. Stan is already out.

I think Murray now has a great chance to win Wimbledon, but I thought that even before Novak was knocked out.

I think novak’s loss shows just how hard it was to win four in a row and what it can take out of a player.

    • It will be even tougher to win the calendar slam as one has to win all four within a span of 8 and a half months with FO/Wimbledon being just 3 weeks apart now(in the past it was 2 weeks apart).

  2. COME ON!! Maybe my prediction of Roger wasn’t so bad lol. Just know if it happens I get to say I told you so. ? I’m so happy for Querrey. This just blows the draw open. Either way someone is making their first slam QF. I’m thinking Mahut right now but if Querrey actually backs it up with more good tennis then he has a great shot. Don’t really know who I’ll be rooting for because it would be sick to see Mahut in the quarters at 34 and also awesome to see Sam back it up and make his first QF.

    • History has shown us that when a player gets a huge upset win, they aren’t able to back it up. I am not sure that Querrey will be able to do it. Someone has a great chance to capitalize on novak’s draw opening up.

Murray has some challenges in his draw, but he knows that Novak won’t be waiting in the final.

I did not think fed had a chance because of a possible meeting with Novak in the semis. That was the basis for my belief that he would not win. This is a huge break for him, but before any – I told you so – he has to get there.

We have Delpo and Raonic in the mix, too. This Wimbledon just got a lot more interesting,

      • Lol I know I mean if it happens. He still needs to win four more matches of course. And yeah it’s way more interesting now that Novak is out. We will see Querrey or Mahut in the QF now so that will be awesome. Honestly I want the winner of that to make semis or an all American QF with Sock vs Querrey. I think if Raonic makes QF Mahut would have a better chance than Sam. What I’m thinking is gonna happen now is Raonic over Mahut in QF but we’ll see. I would just love to see Mahut or Querrey in semis. Not because fed would have an easier time but that would help lol.

          • For me the tournament is already a lot more interesting but would be even more so if Murray lost to Kyrgios. It would awesome if Nick made a run and also having top two seeds out would be insane. Of course I’m a huge fed fan so I’m pulling for him to win it all. For me it’s the opposite of interesting without Roger.

        • Benny,

You are a great tennis fan! You went for it with your pick of Fed and if it happens, you can say – I told you so – all you want! I just did not foresee Novak losing at all, especially in the third round. That changes things for Fed. It’s up to him to take advantage of it now. I am sure he will be very motivated.

I would love to see the American men do well. It would be great if Querrey can get momentum and confidence from his big win. It’s just that so many times there’s the inevitable letdown. Maybe it won’t happen to Querrey,

The last time I watched, Sock was down two sets to Raonic, who is serving well and looking very good. We will have to see about Mahut.

          Lots of exciting tennis ahead!

  3. Only 2 players have won Wimbledon after winning the FO……….Borg and Rafa. They did that when there was no breathing space between the 2 tournaments and they did it more than once.

I wished Djoker would lose I just didn’t believe it would happen. To me, his game is not entertaining to watch so I’ll take more interest in Wimbledon now.

        • that doesn’t change history books!! So , to correct you: THREE players have won the channel slam: Nadal, Borg, Federer! With Borg having won thrice and Rafa twice

          • vr,

Thanks for setting the record straight. Fed did it, too. Enough said. One can’t just ignore it.

            No revisionist history.

Novak losing that early in a slam is very surprising, but maybe the mental aspect caught up with him. He just made history in a big way. He may need to take a little time to recharge.

I was always going to watch Wimbledon, no matter what. I think things have gotten more intriguing with two of the top players out.

    • Rafa is the only ATP player to have won three GS tournaments in a row on three different surfaces in the same calendar year.

      • yep…this is correct.. really proud of this achievement…. nobody has EVER done it because there were no hard courts in Laver’s time.

    • Yeah! I’m so happy for it! Another booring NoleAndy final would just be too much to handle!

Hope Nick can raise his level and stop being childish to beat them all! ???

  4. Really happy for Sam and really happy for Fed because it really opens up his draw and one of my biggest dreams is to see him win a Grand slam once more. We’ll see if it happens.

    • Because Rafa is (and has been for a long time) the rock star of the tennis world! ?

Björn Borg said already in 2007: “Rafa is like the new rock star of tennis.”
      🙂

  5. I think from the top half it will be either Raonic or Fed in the final. Bottom half, it is Murray or ….???
I agree with NNY about revisionist history. Too much of it has been spouted by her mates trying to discount Rafa. Time they stuck to facts instead of spreading lies like Rafa is mentally ill or that Uncle T is evil.

      • After the first sentence, I thought finally you have a post where you aren’t instigating…but the usual followed :/

Anyway, Raonic can beat Federer… fed’s place in the final is far from guaranteed.

        • Yep if Raonic is on fire and fed doesn’t start to look sharper on court he’s in trouble. I think Roger will be warmed up enough to win it though. But I would prefer he played someone else.

        • Vr, how come you never point out when native is constantly instigating? In fact mine is a reaction to her instigation.

          • where has native instigated? could you please point out an instance where she started instigating all of sudden? thanks.

Raonic’s average second serve speed against Sock was 119 mph… he’s never served bigger than this! he can take anyone down on a given day if luck is also on his side..

          • Ha ha, you are really blind when it comes to native. She instigates ALL the time.
nadline forgot about Fed, you pointed it out, she made a joke claiming she had erased 2009. You said facts are facts. So far legit exchange. Then native piled on. native always piles on when nadline or augusta is involved. If you do not believe me , do your research. In the instant case she said ” no revisionist history” . My post was a response to that. If you think it is ok for native to constantly encourage attacks with…”well said” , “you are killing me” ,
“you are cracking me up” etc, but think it is not ok for others to react to her
instigations, then no one can help you see reason.

          • I am not blind to anything….native’s far from being an instigator. You need to look into what was ‘well said’ or ‘revisionist theory’ said in response to! If someone corrects a mistake and points out a fallacy/inconsistency or something like that, then giving it a thumbs up is generally fine, no?

It is when hate posts or ,posts that are simply instigating, get thumbs up and ‘well said’ that trouble is created and and the same old crap ensues.

I am not convincing you or anything but agreeing with someone’s factual posts is not instigating.

Let’s not elongate this and stick to tennis.

Look what NNY has said about correcting someone’s mistakes:

      • vr,

Thanks for your efforts to inject some reason and rationality regarding my connect about revisionist history. As you said so well, I was merely agreeing with your clarification of the record. The fact that it could in some way be construed as instigating by Mary, is just more evidence that she is not here for the right reasons.

Anyone here has been able to see what nadline has said about me over and over again. Connects about how I have crawled out from behind a rock and revealed that I am a Rafa hater and closet Novak fan, go far beyond mere instigating. It pure self-Indulgent hateful rhetoric. This idea that a small clique can presume to decide who is and who is not, a Rafa fan is presumptuous and arrogant. But they do it all the time. Then they get upset when I remind them of how Rafa conducts himself and how he would never trash his fellow players.

Even though Mary said she was done, finis, yesterday, she just could not shut up about me today. He agenda is clear.

Ricky specifically said that email us your friend in response to her obsessive attacks on me. Not that I want to receive an email from her, but Ricky made the point that this kind of personal vendetta has no place on this site. Yet Mary is still here trolling away!

          • Augusta,

That was just your very biased opinion. Remember how you have said to people that opinions are not facts? So the fact that you made a self-serving comment like that is not a factual statement and proves nothing.

            Her comments speak for themselves.

            .
If my memory serves me correctly, I quoted Wikipedia after your long post (in which your were lecturing, as usual) : “What distinguishes fact from opinion is that facts are more likely to be verifiable.”
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion

    • Mary,

You seem to be confused. First, you agree with me about “revisionist history” and then you reply to vr and say that this is an example of me instigating!

So which is it! Make up your mind!

Also, get my name right! It’s Nativenewyorker, NNY if you please!

      Then get your stories straight!

  6. “I think novak’s loss shows just how hard it was to win four in a row and what it can take out of a player.”
It is not novak’s loss which shows winning four in a row is hard but the fact that so few players in tennis history have achieved it.

  7. RT @naturelle13: OMG, the screen shows that Djokovic lost and the everyone on the grounds at Wimbledon cheers and applaudes. ? #Wimbledon

Just like when Rafa beating Isner at the French was announced on another court except the boorish French crowd whistled with disapproval lol.

  8. native, your post is hilarious. Are you seriously being funny or did you really not understand that I was responding to your instigation? Anyway, comments on this subject are closed from my side. finis…

  9. What are you trying to prove hawkeye? You have bored us with your endless posts about Rafa’s mental illness and Rafa’s unpopularity, empty stands, applause for Rafa’s conquerors, jeers and whistles for Rafa’s triumphs, posts about the GOAThood ( Djokovic) or popularity of his rivals ( Federer). Ok, we get it. You hate Rafa. Can you please move on and stop boring us with your repetitive posts?
By the way I thought amy’s cover was sheer genius. Maybe she was inspired by Mozart. Amadeus…..amydeuce!

  10. vr, hawkeye and the rest of the “gang”. Nothing you say about Rafa is an insult to him. Anything remotely negative about Novak is toxic.
hawkeye you are the straw man expert. No need to be modest and to bestow the title on ritb. All hail hawkeye the undisputed champion!!

  11. ritb is not here but you guys constantly bait her under the pretext that she is me. Then you adopt a holier than thou attitude and find fault with me for blowing amy’s cover. I am sure ed had guessed it. To hawkeye and native it wouldn’t have made a difference as she was part of their gang as deuce on tennistalk. The gang used to regularly launch attacks on hapless victims. Scoretracker was their favorite “lynchee”.
The troll gang viciously attacked ritb simply because they suspected she was me. But when I reveal amy’s identity, I am instigating!!! Wow vr!!! King of double standards!!!

    • Constantly bait!!!??? What are you on to??

On another note, if someone did mention RITB, for them at least accused is at least posting. Amy (who’s not posting) is accused of being another posted who hasn’t posted in ages !!! Hahahahaah

Yeah the vicious gang… I’ve sent many to the ICU I guess? Lol

  12. I mention ritb and the database regurgitator and look at the two that respond.

    Too easy.

They know who they are lol.
