Nadal withdraws from Paris Masters due to knee injury

Rafael Nadal withdrew from his scheduled quarterfinal match at the Rolex Paris Masters on Friday due to a right-knee injury. Nadal was less than 100 percent during a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over Pablo Cuevas on Thursday, but he managed to survive that contest after two hours and 20 minutes.

The top-seeded Spaniard warmed up earlier on Friday before deciding that he could not play.

“Yesterday the pain during the match was too much, but I didn’t want to stop,” Nadal explained. “It’s not the thing that I love to do. I have to pull out. Of course it’s a very tough decision for me, especially here in Paris, which has been the most important city in my career without a doubt. It’s a tough situation, but I tried my best. I did one treatment yesterday night to try and play today.”

The world No. 1, who clinched that year-end ranking with his second-round Paris win over Hyeon Chung, is questionable for the upcoming World Tour Finals in London. He has one week in between Paris and London with which to recover.

“I’m not thinking about London,” Nadal added. “It’s about the longer term–to be able to continue playing tennis. It’s important to play tennis as long as possible. The knee is always bothering me a little bit, but sometimes it’s worse. I’m going to go back, check again with the doctors (like) I did after Shanghai…. Let’s see. I’m going to do my treatment. In the past it worked well.”

    • Yeah, I think it would be in his best interest to not playboy WTF. Honestly I think the same for Fed. They both would be helping their chances for AO by taking rest of the year off. Clearly being well-rested paid off for them at AO last year! Although Fed won’t skip WTF, for sure.

  1. This year’s WTF lineup is pathetic now. Federer is the only name on the list that really belongs there. Maybe the ATP should do an “invalids” WTF in January. Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Raonic, Nishikori, Wawrinka. I’d add Fed in as an “honorary” invalid and DelPotro too, since it looks like he now has a hip problem. Bet it’d be better tennis than we’re gonna get in 2 weeks.

  2. I gotta say, thank god for Rafa’s sake that he didn’t get hurt in the first match and therefore lose or retire from it. What if that had happened, and then he had to pull out of WTF? Fed would have then have the chance the end #1 if he won WTF… It would have been just so sad for Rafa had that scenario happened. Although I would like to think that had he had to retire from that Chung match, or lost it, he surely would have played WTF if ONLY to get that 1 single RR win to secure #1.

  3. It is more important for Rafa not to damage his knee more, than to end 2017 at No. 1.
The fact that he will end the year as no.1 is fantastic, more than I had hoped last Jan.
He had an unbelievable year, as did Roger. Both are unbelievable for tennis.
Rafa should take the rest of the year off and rest up for AO.
