First-round action at the ATP 500 event in Munich resumes on Tuesday, when Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jakub Mensik take the court. Auger-Aliassime meets Mariano Navone, while Mensik awaits Yannick Hanfmann.

Auger-Aliassime and Navone will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they clash in round one of the BMW Open on Tuesday. The 19th-ranked Canadian has already been all over the place in 2025. He came out of the gates on fire with titles in Adelaide and Montpellier followed by a runner-up showing in Dubai, but he is back on the struggle bus. Auger-Aliassime is 1-4 in his last five matches and started his clay-court swing with a straight-set loss to Daniel Altmaier in Monte-Carlo.

A first-round draw against Navone at the BMW Open on Tuesday is not a favorable one. Although the 70th-ranked Argentine has underwhelmed so far this year, he is always dangerous on clay. He at least did well to qualify for the main draw in Monte-Carlo before falling to an in-form Matteo Berrettini. Auger-Aliassime is very good on this surface, but Navone is a straight up clay-court specialist. The underdog may be able to take advantage of an opponent who is a bit short on confidence.

Mensik will be back in action for the first time since emerging as the surprise champion of the Miami Open last month. The 19-year-old Czech was already a rising star on tour, but his win over Novak Djokovic in the Miami final truly announced himself as a legitimate contender for the biggest titles in tennis. Mensik is up to No. 23 in the world and he boasts a 14-6 record for his 2025 campaign heading into Munich.

Up first for him on Tuesday is Hanfmann, whom he has never faced. Although the 33-year-old German is struggling down at 131st in the rankings, he is skilled on clay and also playing at home–so he cannot be discounted. Hanfmann has already played two matches on dirt this spring, losing to Adrian Mannarino in the Houston first round and to David Goffin in a tight three-setter in Monte-Carlo qualifying. This may not be entirely routine as Mensik sinks his teeth into a new surface, but the No. 6 seed should advance.

  1. Yea, I don’t like how Auger-Ali-Sesame plays. Just like Coric. They just slow down the match to play every point, like Rafa (how one should), but end up just showcasing a 50% point win ratio against the likes of anyone decent from say Rank 20 to 100. It’s just so annoying. Raonic played so much “faster” than him, all things considering. I was a big fan of Milos. I’m gonna fade Auger Sesame every chance I get this year. Weakest 6’4″ player ever.
