Miami R3 previews and predictions: Fognini vs. Kyrgios, Sinner vs. Carreno Busta

Nick Kyrgios suddenly has a lot of momentum behind him and will try to keep it going at Fabio Fognini’s expense on Sunday in Miami. Jannik Sinner and Pablo Carreno Busta are also aiming for a place in the fourth round.

(WC) Nick Kyrgios
vs. (31) Fabio Fognini

Fognini and Kyrgios will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in round three of the Miami Open on Sunday. Their only previous encounter came at the same stage of this same event in 2018 (albeit when it was held at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne), with Kyrgios cruising 6-3, 6-3. The 26-year-old Aussie is a heavy this time around thanks to his sudden hot streak. Coming off a quarterfinal performance in Indian Wells, Kyrgios followed up a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Adrian Mannarino with an alarming 6-3, 6-0 beatdown of Andrey Rublev.

There are no such encouraging signs for Fognini. The 34th-ranked Italian has won only seven matches this season, including a mere three on hard courts. He needed two hours and 51 minutes to outlast Taro Daniel 6-7(1), 6-2, 7-6(5) on Friday. These conditions are favorable for Kyrgios, who loves playing in Miami and should hit Fognini off the court as long as he stays motivated.

Pick: Kyrgios in 2

(17) Pablo Carreno Busta vs. (9) Jannik Sinner

Sinner has a ton of points to defend after finishing runner-up at this tournament in 2021. The 11th-ranked Italian’s quest to go one step farther in 2022 almost never got off the ground, as he faced three match points against Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. Nonetheless, Sinner came back for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8) victory after two hours and 40 minutes.

The only previous encounter between Sinner and Carreno Busta was something similar; the Spaniard prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(6) on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam. Of course, Sinner is a completely different player more than two years later and Carreno Busta has gone somewhat in the other direction. The world No. 19 is in decent form, but he is a modest 9-5 in 2022 following Friday’s 6-3, 6-2 rout of a struggling David Goffin. Carreno Busta could win this one on clay, but at one of Sinner’s favorite tournaments it should mostly be one-way traffic.

Pick: Sinner in 2

  1. Kyrios vs the Fog – two head cases?! That should be a cracker!!!! 😂

I really can’t call this one to be honest. One with endless skill and the other who can win on any day when he is in the mood? Tough call! Just hoping for a good match!

    • You guys are good at deceiving the public, eh. Just look at what you’re doing to Putin. Dont look outside for the enemy because the enemy is within.

      • Hi! There’s a “Non Tennis” forum for comments like this. Many of us are all too aware of what’s happening in the world, and need a break from politics when we read about tennis.

        • Thanks Margot but I’ll post when and where I think aporopriate. If you didn’t notice I don’t take orders or direction from you.

          • You are a troll. You are here to disrupt and get some much needed attention.

Margot is correct. There is a non-tennis forum which Ricky was kind enough to create. If you must blab on incoherently about politics, that’s where you should be.

Rules are for everyone, even despicable trolls.

          • There are plenty of sites where you can vent, if you so wish. A harmless tennis site where people can share their views about players/matches doesn’t seem the right place to me. That being said, this poster seems to have a massive sense of entitlement so probably wont stop.

  2. Putin is the enemy. He has murdered his political rivals and tried to kill others. Now he has invaded a peaceful nation using a vicious lie. Sound familiar? Where is his good buddy Trump? You know, the one who said he was a genius after he invaded a sovereign nation!

The enemies within are the ones who tried to overthrow the government on January 6, 2021. They are being dealt with as they are sentenced to prison for their crimes.

    • I disagree mostly with what you’re saying and how you’re presenting it and I think most of the public aren’t as naive as they use be, as well.

And I don’t have time to engage in a debate over global politics with someone I believe is inherently dishonest.

I said what I needed to say in regards to your pattern of behavior, i.e. deceiving the public by making it look like I made an incorrect selection/prediction, and that’s where it ends with me.

        • Please God just go away!
No surprises that this comes from the guy who said that our making comments on a tennis site were cultural issues which justified/led to mass murder.
If you think comments on a tennis site justify mass murder then of course you worship at the altar of male violence epitomised by that psychopath Putin.
You have so many psychological issues you should go get yourself fixed.

  3. Oh and as for your marvellous predictions they are usually wrong!
Eg Sinner or Zverev to win AO.
Tsitsi to beat Med in the semis.
All last spring you banged on and on and on about how Rafa was useless and on the rubbish heap. How did that end up? Also, at the same time, you banged on and on about how Tsitsi was going to win multiple slams that year. How did that go?
These are only a handful of your omniscient predictions. Not so much Nostradamus as Uselessdamus.
The Dysfunctional Tennis Blog would be much more your cup of tea. It’s full of crazies blathering on about how they love Trump and the New World Order. Check it out! You would get on famously with the nutters on there.
This site is full of people, frequently women, who are way more intelligent and better educated than you are.

  5. How’s the rigged Academy Awards going? Was there any surprise that King Richard won? Couldn’t see that coming a mile away given everything that’s been going on.

Manipulating public sentiment is like an addiction for you guys.

Taxing billionaires after 100 years of exploitation and ripping off the global community because you don’t want to be seen as hypocrites now that you are sanctioning and seizing other billionaires property.

That’s what you are, big time schemers, manipulators and big time hypocrites.

    • Dunno but at least there’s a tennis connection however unintentional
Agree this is a place to talk tennis and nothing else
