The Mutua Madrid Open draw ceremony was held on Monday and top half is especially intriguing. It includes last week’s champions, Alexander Zverev (Munich) and Holger Rune (Barcelona), in addition to 2024 Madrid champion Felix Auger-Aliassime and runner-up Andrey Rublev.

Zverev enjoyed home-court advantage in Munich, but he will likely have the crowd against him in each of his first two matches this week. The German awaits either Jaume Munar or Roberto Bautista Agut and could meet either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Pablo Carreno Busta in round three. Zverev’s quarter also includes Rublev, Arthur Fils, Miami winner Jakub Mensik, and Munich finalist Ben Shelton.

Elsewhere in the top half, Rune and Auger-Aliassime are on a collision course for the fourth round. However, Rune could have a tough opener on his hands against either Fabian Marozsan or Flavio Cobolli and Auger-Aliassime will probably face Daniil Medvedev in the last 32. Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, and Sebastian Korda also find themselves in Rune’s quarter.

The other side of the bracket has one quarter that is incredibly strong and another that is particularly weak.

It is good news for Novak Djokovic, who enjoys a friendly path at least to the semifinals at the Caja Magica. The 37-year-old Serb could run into Sebastian Baez in the third round, Frances Tiafoe in the last 16, and either Jack Draper, Tommy Paul, or Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals.

Carlos Alcaraz’s section is stacked. The Barcelona runner-up is joined by Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, and Czechs Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka. Alcaraz’s projected path to the semis is Zizou Bergs, Lehecka, Dimitrov, and De Minaur.

First-round matchups in watch include Marozsan vs. Cobolli, Alex Michelsen vs. Alexander Bublik, Lorenzo Sonego vs. Miomir Kecmanovic, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard vs. Mariano Navone, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs. Hamad Medjedovic.
