Goffin comes back from 6-4, 5-1 down to beat Granollers

David Goffin squandered a 5-1 lead in the second set of his Monte-Carlo quarterfinal loss to Grigor Dimitrov last week. He flipped the script in Barcelona.

Facing Marcel Granollers during second-round action at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Tuesday afternoon, Goffin recovered from a 6-4, 5-1 deficit and saved one match point with Granollers serving at 5-2, 40-30 to eventually prevail 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2.

Following his meltdown, Granollers at least managed to hold serve at 5-6 to force a tiebreaker. However, the Spanish wild card lost the ‘breaker without much of a fight and dropped serve to begin the decider–all but ending his chances of righting the ship. With momentum firmly in hand, Goffin surrendered a grand total of one service point in the final set.

Highlights:

Roberto Bautista Agut, Adrian Mannarino, Feliciano Lopez, and Malek Jaziri joined the fourth-seeded Belgian in the third round.

Bautista Agut scraped past Ivo Karlovic 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4 in the last match of the day on stadium court. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Bautista Agut was quick to take complete control. The 15th-ranked Spaniard broke right away in both the second and third while also adding an additional service break in the middle frame for good measure.

Mannarino picked up an impressive clay-court win over Pablo Cuevas, Malek Jaziri took care of lucky loser Ernesto Escobedo, and Lopez held off Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lopez fired 13 aces despite serving at just 46 percent as he advanced after two hours and 18 minutes of play.
