Finals previews and predictions: Mannarino vs. Dzumhur, Zverev vs. Lacko

The last matches before Wimbledon will be played on Saturday, when top two seeds Adrian Mannarino and Damir Dzumhur collide in the Antalya final. In Eastbourne, meanwhile, an all-unseeded affair pits Mischa Zverev against Lukas Lacko.

Turkish Airlines Open: (1) Adrian Mannarino vs. (2) Damir Dzumhur

Mannarino and Dzumhur will be doing battle for the third time in their careers when they clash in the Antalya title match on Saturday. Both of their previous meetings have gone the way of Mannarino, who prevailed 7-5, 7-6(3) at an indoor hard-court Challenger event in Bosnia and Herzegovina five years ago before cruising 6-2, 6-2 one season later in Winston-Salem. Grass will do nothing to diminish the Frenchman’s confidence, as this is without question his favorite surface. Mannarino has twice reached the second week at Wimbledon and he is through to a second consecutive Antalya final thanks to victories over Ricardas Berankis, Joao Sousa, and Gael Monfils.

Far less accomplished on the slick stuff, Dzumhur owned a grand total of three ATP-level grass wins prior to this week. The 30th-ranked Bosnian has already doubled that number, following up a first-round bye with defeats of Marius Copil, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and Jiri Vesely. On grass, Mannarino will in all likelihood be too crafty for Dzumhur–just as he was during their previous encounters on hard courts.

Pick: Mannarino in 2

Nature Valley International: Lukas Lacko vs. Mischa Zverev

Showdowns between Zverev and Lacko are nothing new, but they have most often come at the lower levels of tennis. But how’s this for new? One of these two veterans will capture his first career title on Saturday in Eastbourne when they square off for the second time on the main tour. Zverev got the job done 6-4, 6-4 during first-round action on the grass of Halle last summer, improving to 4-2 in the overall head-to-head series (4-1 not including a retirement).

The 30-year-old German is an all-court player, but his style works well on grass and he has appeared in the Wimbledon third round on two occasions–including last season (lost to eventual champion Roger Federer). So far this week he has taken out Nicolas Jarry, Steve Johnson, Denis Shapovalov, and Mikhail Kukushkin to reach and ATP final for the third time. Lacko has advanced to his second final thanks to wins at the expense of Roberto Quiroz, Diego Schwartzman, Cameron Norrie, and Marco Cecchinato. The 94th-ranked Slovak is now an even 7-7 at the ATP level for his 2018 campaign. Zverev, who has won eight consecutive sets in Eastbourne, has been the most impressive player this week and he should have an edge on the green stuff.

Pick: Zverev in 3

13 Comments on Finals previews and predictions: Mannarino vs. Dzumhur, Zverev vs. Lacko

  1. Wozniacki should beat Sabalenka in Eastbourne in 3 sets. Caro will have to outlast Aryna. It won’t be easy. If it was best of 5 sets: definitely Caro.

It’s a shame the WTA doesn’t do Bo5 for Wimbledon – at least from the QF’s on.

  2. Zverev has never actually won an ATP singles title, has he? That is surprising to me… If he can make a major QF, beating the world #1 en route, then there is no reason he shouldn’t have a title to his name when he retires. He’s always seemed like a good guy to me. I would love to see him get his first tour-level title. It would be fitting for it to come on grass, givien his game style.
