Federer into Wimbledon quarters, Anderson battles past Monfils

Roger Federer booked his spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals with another straight-set victory, this time over Adrian Mannarino on Monday. Next up for Federer is Kevin Anderson, a four-set winner at the expense of Gael Monfils.

(1) Roger Federer def.  (22) Adrian Mannarino 6-0, 7-5, 6-4

No. 1 seed Roger Federer, the overwhelming odds-on favorite to lift the trophy on Sunday, raced out to a 4-0 lead before opponent Adrian Mannarino could catch his breath properly. The Frenchman, who was the 22nd seed, is a much better player than he showed in his first-set drubbing.

Fortunately for the crowd, Mannarino woke up in time to seriously contest the second set. He made no dent on the Federer serve, but he managed to save six of the seven break points against him to push Federer to 7-5. The world No. 2 actually faced a trio of break points in the third set, but some clutch serving saw them quickly dispatched.

Federer will take on big-hitting South African Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals.

(8) Kevin Anderson def. Gael Monfils 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 5-7, 7-6(4)

World No. 8 Kevin Anderson required three and a half hours and four very tight sets to get past inspired and unseeded Frenchman Gael Monfils. Anderson is no stranger to tiebreakers, but they usually involve the South African holding serve relatively easily but unable to break. In this case, Monfils managed a break of serve in the first and second sets and two breaks in the third, but he also surrendered three breaks of serve–enough to force the three ‘breakers, each of which went to Anderson.

Anderson’s efforts win him a spot in the quarters opposite title favorite Federer on Wednesday.

  1. Fed’s serve has been so good, I don’t see Anderson taking a set. And I doubt Anderson will return as well as Mannarino did after that 1st set disaster.
