On-court ceremony and interviews following Federer’s clinching of No. 1 ranking

Roger Federer will make a return trip to the No. 1 world ranking next Monday. Federer clinched it when he overcame Robin Haase 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Friday. The Swiss, needing only a semifinal showing because he is just 155 points behind Rafael Nadal, cruised in a mere one hour and 19 minutes despite a relatively slow start.

  1. Big question is if Roger can end year 2018 No.1. I doubt he can defend both IW and Miami. Nadal has to defend many point too. I expect them to finish this year very close again.

    • his IW and Miami wins from last year only mean that he won’t be No. 1 at the end of March

they have nothing to do with his chances of ending 2018 at No. 1. 2017 points have nothing to do with the end of 2018.

      • I know Ricky. I mentioned those 2 tourney, as they are the next one for him. Although I’m not sure if he’ll play Miami. I don’t mind Nadal to regain nr. 1 again, probably they will have a nice share of that in 2018 🙂
But Y.E would be extraordinary indeed. Nadal has more points to defend, but Fed will play less. So, that’s very tight.

      • The way I read Eugene’s take is that without those points, if he wants to skip clay again, he’d really have to win USO to have a solid shot at No. 1.

However, I predict Fed will end the year at No. 1 the way things are shaping up (or down more accurately).
