Australian Open R4 preview and prediction: Tsitsipas vs. Sinner

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner will clash in a popcorn-worthy fourth-round match as the Australian Open marches into the second week.

Jannik Sinner participated in one of the best matches of 2022, a barnburner five-setter against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. The 21-year-old had a consistent, if ever-so-slightly disappointing showing at the majors last year with three quarterfinals and a round of 16 at the French Open, where he retired against Andrey Rublev.

Sinner’s path to the Australian Open fourth round was routine for his first two matches. Straight-set wins over Kyle Edmund over Tomas Etcheverry positioned the Italian nicely for a foray into the second week. But an in-form Marton Fucsovics pushed Sinner to the limit. The Hungarian snagged the first two sets before Sinner mounted his comeback.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 3 seed, has been in outstanding form. The Greek is unbeaten so far in 2023. He won each of his matches for team Greece at the United Cup and he hasn’t dropped a single set through three matches in Melbourne. Tsitsipas posted wins over Quentin Halys, Rinky Hijikata, and Tallon Griekspoor to earn his spot in the last 16.

This has been an unkind matchup for Sinner. Tsitsipas has won four of their previous five meetings and he has done so on both clay and hard courts. Despite that fact that Sinner played terribly against Fucsovics for more than two sets, expect him to make Tsitsipas work for a quarterfinal berth.

  1. Oh, what a match!!! Sinner’s on fire!! Hope he consolidates the break!! Hate early breaks though!!!

I meant y r my posts showing up as Anonymous?

  2. I doubt Tsitsipas can recover from that. Korda was showing signs of fatigue with his shots also.

You have to turn up mentally for 7 matches but you also have to have physical resilience. Not easy when you are a light build. Your recovery program would need to be impeccable.

  3. The coverage here for the AO really stinks. We did not get to see the match with Tsitsipas and Sinner. From the secure it looks like quite the battle. Sinner really has a lot of potential
