I am relieved that Isner is out. One less worry for Rafa. I heard that Sock lost, too.
The American women really had problems. Four are out I believe, including Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens.
Also Coco Van and Townsend. While it’s kind of fun to see someone shaped more or less like me playing pro tennis, I really think she’d do better if she dropped some weight.
I didn’t expect Sock to do well. He looked terrible in his last match. He seemed to have some kind of hip problem in this match. I really did not expect Isner to get deep enough to meet Rafa. Does he ever get past the 3rd round of a slam?
I didnβt think Isner would get through to play Rafa. But I am okay that heβs gone. Rafa has a good opportunity to play himself into form with this draw. I remember that Mayer gave h a battle in the USO. That match will not be nearly as easy as the first one.
Rafa explained in his on court post match interview, that he got a late start with practicing and training because he had to give the knee time to heal. Thatβs why he said he had to pull out of Brisbane. But he seemed really happy to be playing. He said that he just wants to enjoy the moment of playing this year at the AO. I understand, because I try to stay in the moment and just be glad that Rafa is still playing.
Don’t worry Nny,Rafa will be better prepared this time and fully aware of the danger that Mayer represents,especially after that scare at the US.
I found a very interesting stat for all Rafa fans,every time Rafa played Mayer at SlamsοΌRG 2014 and USO 2017οΌhe went on to win the title at those Majors.That can only be a good sign!

The American women got the worst of it. Sloane Stephens won her first slam at the USO and she follows it up by losing here in the first round.
Venus had a great year and now sheβs gone in the first round.

If it was lower ranked players, then it wouldnβt be such a surprise. But you have an all-time great with Venus and Sloane having just won her first slam. Very disappointing.
Yeah Venus got worst draw ever with the badass Bencic. But I’m pretty sure Sloane has lost eight straight since the US Open. That’s just crazy.
I havenβt been following the women lately. I did not know about Sloaneβs losing streak. One would think that winning her first slam would give her confidence. I guess itβs not easy to follow up your first slam win.
I do agree that Venus getting Bencic was just a bad match up for her. She would not be at her best and having to face a tough opponent was too much.

I know RC canβt stand her. I donβt often have an intense dislike for a player, but she is beyond obnoxious. Way too full of herself and a poor sport to boot. I saw the handshake between Coco and the player who beat her as she barely shook hands and did not even look at her. She is an ill-mannered young woman with a bad attitude.
