Felix Auger-Aliassime appeared to injure his left calf late in the first set of his 7-5, 6-1 loss to Jannik Sinner during round-robin competition at the Nitto ATP Finals on Monday night in Turin.
Auger-Aliassime started showing signs of an issue while serving stay in the opening set at 5-6. The eighth-ranked Canadian promptly dropped serve, and things hardly improved in the second. Afterward, though, Auger-Aliassime expressed some optimism.
“(It’s) not dangerous,” the 25-year-old assured. “I’m not too concerned. He’s an amazing player. You have to give credit when the guy is just better than you. Today he was better than me. I’ll get ready for the next one.
“He’s tough to beat anywhere, especially here. He started off amazing [and] never looked back, really. From the first point to the last, he was amazing–toughest guy to beat here.”
Assuming he is good to go, Auger-Aliassime will face Ben Shelton in his second round-robin match on Wednesday. Sinner will go up against Alexander Zverev.
Auger-Aliassime and Shelton are both 0-1 in Group Bjorn Borg after the American lost his debut contest 6-3, 7-6(6) to Zverev on Sunday. The head-to-head series stands at 1-0 in favor of the Canadian. Sinner is 5-4 lifetime against Zverev and has won four in a row–including three this season.
