Chris Eubanks, the new American men’s star, made quick work of opponent Andres Martin to advance to the Atlanta Open second round.

American Chris Eubanks continues to take the tennis world by storm. The world No. 32 earned a spot in the second round at the Atlanta Open with a routine straight-set win over fellow Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Andres Martin 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday night.

Eubanks started the 2023 season ranked 123rd and a regular participant in the Challenger tour events. That changed abruptly for him at the Miami Masters, where he came up through qualies to reach the quarterfinals. A second win streak started for the 6’7” American at the grass event in Mallorca, where he won his first tour title (he is one for one in tour finals).

However the run that made Eubanks a star was his impressive trip to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, where he took out Cam Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas before finally going down in five tough sets to Daniil Medvedev. Eubanks returns to North American hard courts with star power and a likely seeding for the U.S. Open.

The Atlanta native was all big serves and confidence in round one. His volleys found their mark and while Martin played reasonably well, his younger countryman was simply outclassed.

“I’ve always liked these courts,” Eubanks said following his win. “I like the humidity, I always like hard courts, I always like bouncy conditions. This feels really, really at home.”

Eubanks will play fellow American Brandon Nakashima on Wednesday night.
