Acapulco SF preview and prediction: Isner vs. Fritz

In an all-American clash, veteran John Isner will take on the up-and-coming Taylor Fritz for a spot in the Acapulco final. They beat in-form opponents Tommy Paul and Kyle Edmund, respectively, in the quarterfinals.

(5) John Isner vs. Taylor Fritz

John Isner has had a slightly bumpy start to the 2020 season. Going into Abierto Mexicano Telcel, he was 4-6 on the season. The 6’10” American earned a pair of wins in Auckland and another couple at the Australian Open. Isner’s path to the Acapulco semifinals includes victories over Mischa Zverev, Marcos Giron, and Tommy Paul.

Countryman Taylor Fritz hasn’t exactly been on a winning tear, himself. The 22-year-old was 3-5 on the year heading into this week, and along with Isner ushered the American team at the ATP Cup to a rather embarrassing 0-3 record in round robin-play. He dispatched John Millman, Ugo Humbert, and Kyle Edmund to earn his Acapulco semifinal spot.

Isner holds the slight head-to-head advantage over Fritz, but the elder American’s last win came back in 2017 at Wimbledon. Fritz won their most recent meeting a year ago in Auckland. With Isner serving better in Acapulco than he had been most of the season–and with the courts playing favorably for bit hitters–the fifth seed should have an excellent opportunity to make his first final of 2020.
