  1. Calling a straight set victory over Nadal in any grand slam final is a very poor pick. At least 4 sets if they both reach the final.

      • That makes little to no sense. If you can rationalise the 3 set prediction should they meet in the final then cool. You can’t. Rafa never lost in straights in a final. Rafa djokovic history of 4/5 set matches. There is no data or form to suggest a rafole final would be 3 sets.

        Its a poor prediction.

        • there is plenty of data

          And it was analyzed correctly.

You haven’t even filled out a bracket, so all your arguments are mute until you do. How do we know you don’t have Smyczek over Bedene in the final until you actually step up to the plate and make some predictions.

  2. I just want Rafa to get over his first match first before I start getting excited about who else he will beat. I do know one thing, that if Rafa makes the final, he is not going to lose to anyone let alone in straight sets.

Of their 12 slam matches, Nadal leads Djokovic 9-3 and he has beaten Djokovic in straight sets several times. Djokovic has yet to beat Nadal in straight sets in a slam.

  3. djokovic in 3 …hmmm..if rafa is able to reach the final, he will definitely be prepared enough to at least take a set off djokovic. Cannot say much about rafa until I say him play. So you have Tomic reaching the qtr finals, that’s a big one there.

    • vamosrafa,

Ricky picking Tomic over Berdy is the one that caught my eye, too. That was a surprise. I am not sure it’s going to happen, even given Tomic’s tendency to do well in his country’s slam. Berdy can be unpredictable and inconsistent, too.

I will definitely not be thinking ahead when I watch Rafa’s first match. One at a time. However, should Rafa make it to the final then I cannot see him losing in straight sets. I assume that the thinking is that Rafa won’t have anything left to go up against Novak if he gets to the final.

I remember when no one gave Rafa a chance to beat Fed at the 2009 AO because of that marathon slugfest semifinal with Verdasco and only one day’s rest. We all know how that turned out! But I guess one could say that Rafa was more match ready at that time.

Ricky has to make predictions because it’s his job. Fortunately, I don’t have to. I am reserving any predictions about how far Rafa might go until I see him play his first match. I am in agreement with you on that score. We have to see him on the court in action. I am hoping that he doesn’t get into any long ones in the early rounds. Normally I wouldn’t mind if he wasn’t coming back from that long layoff. But I don’t want him to have to exert too much energy in the early rounds and then run out of gas.

At this point, anything can happen with Rafa. I am just going to be watching and supporting him all the way.

      • Ricky, I so hope they both get to the final then we’ll see who believes in fairies at the bottom of the garden.

I think Rafa’s hurdle is getting through the first few rounds, because he lacks rhythm and intensity atm, not losing to Djoker in straight sets.

  4. Rafa to win it all and surprise everyone :-)..Why not? πŸ™‚ You never know what can happen. Maybe the AO will finally be kind to him after what happened in 2012 and 2014 in final and for the injury pullouts in 2011 and 2010

  5. Interesting final pick, and as much as I’d like to see Rafa make the final, I am not very hopeful. Meanwhile, I am still saddened over Juan Martin’s withdrawal.

  6. Rafa cud win AO but I don’t think he is ready yet to beat Djokovic. against any1 else, I fancy his chances at whatever stage in tournament.

  7. I would love nothing better than to see Rafa in the final again this year at the AO. But I just don’t know that it will happen. That’s why I want to enjoy watching him on the court in his matches and take it one step at a time.

I will be happy to see him get to the second week. That’s when things could get interesting.

I really feel for Delpo. It was a long road back the last time he had wrist surgery. He finally was back at #5 in the world and then the other wrist was injured. I imagine that he must be disappointed, but he is wise to listen to his doctors and follow their advice.
