  1. So rafa still experiences knee pain …it’s just that the pain does not really limit his game for now…

Below re some excerpts from TIME’s interview with Rafa

On preferring five set classics to straight set blowouts ….

“I never like the easy matches. I think that good sportsmen don’t like the easy wins … At the end, if you are winning with a little more drama, it stays in your mind a lot longer than when you are winning easy, no?”

On why he loves Roland Garros, home to the French Open, and playing on clay …

“I always like to play on this beautiful surface that gives you an opportunity to attack, an opportunity to defend. I like this thing. I understand the sport this way. It needs strategy, it needs suffering, it needs good possibilities to make the game interesting, no?”

On the state of his knee …

“I’m still having pain a lot of days. The only thing I wish is that the pain is only minding me when I’m competing. Because I really like to enjoy the rest of the time of my life.”

    On confidence …

“I doubt about myself,” Nadal says. “I think the doubts are good in life. The people who don’t have doubts I think only two things: arrogance or not intelligence.”

On whether Nadal can possibly enjoy his epic matches as much as his fans do …

“It’s difficult to understand for somebody who is not on the court. I don’t know if the word is enjoy. But in some way that feeling is great when you are there and are playing well, the opponent is one of the best in the world, you are competing for important things and you are fighting and you resist a little bit more. You need to find another solution, you need to put one more ball in play, with the right determination in that point because it’s the point that can change the dynamic of the match. So all these things, it’s difficult to say you’re enjoying, but it’s, in some way, yes, I will say—I appreciate what’s going on in that moment. Because all my career, all my life, I work hard to be there, and today you feel there, you are healthy, you are able to run, you are able to fight, you are able to play for something that was a dream for you since you were a kid. You appreciate the moment a lot.”

So the knee still causes pain!

  3. Sometimes I do wonder: who pays some of these journos for some of the rubbish they write? Look at the following headline, “No guarantees for Rafa in Paris”

    http://espn.go.com/tennis/story/_/id/10953041/tennis-no-guarantees-rafael-nadal-paris

When has Rafa ever had guarantees in Paris, or anywhere else for that matter? On the basis of Rome 2014 they are falling over each other writing Rafa off, favouring Djokovic, as if their opinions are going to decide the outcome. All of them had Djokovic as a shoe-in for the Oz Open 2014, we know how that turned out. They had Djokovic winning RG IN 2011, 2012 and 2013………….we know how that turned out.

They need to relax…………..the winner will be revealed in 2 weeks’ time.

—Sometimes I do wonder: who pays some of these journos…—

Their employers and maybe some secret “sponsors”.

  4. Hilarious Gussie. But why do I get the feeling Federer would not appreciate that joke 😉

I bet he lived to regret that pretentious, overweening ‘fashion’ statement. I guess he was under the influence of his friend The Devil Wears Prada. His real faux pas however was to tactlessly don a jacket, pre-embroidered with the number ’15’, in front of a devastated Roddick who had just come within a whisker of thwarting his ambition to beat Pete Sampras’ record of 14 slams.

¤¤ Rafa Nadal talks about RG just minutes before leaving to Paris
Rafa says he is going to train as every time he goes there; this year is a little different from the others because of his last results; he says he will be there where he has good feelings, and it is a different tournament for him because he feels very comfortable but also because his game has improved lately and he has lived very special moments when he has played there.
He says he has got good feeling in Rome and now he hopes he can train and play with more confidence; he will try to consolidate his match and to have more desition [?] at the moment of playing.
He mentions he will have some days to train before he plays his 1st match, and that after Madrid and Rome he felt tired, but he has rested and he hopes he is prepared physically for RG.
He says: “I will try, it´s too early to say anything about the final or semis; I go day by day, but I have good sensations [feeling?], we will see how it goes day by day.”.¤¤

    • RITB: HEALTH WARNING. Looking at the above picture for more than 10 seconds may cause dizziness, palpitations, raised blood pressure, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, and sleeplessness. If you experience any of the above side effects consult your doctor immediately.

      • I still remember watching him in those early years and being completely captivated by his appearance…and I don’t mean just by his good looks. He just looked different from everyone else: The way he played, the interviews he gave in his adorable limited English, his humility, that smile, all of it was completely charming and managed to draw me in. Nearly 10 year later, I’m still hooked. It’ll be a sad day for me when he retires and I’m back to watching tennis without his presence. (It’ll probably be better for my nerves, though).

  6. Rafa and my eldest son have almost the same birthday. Rafa on 3rd June and my son on 4th June so you are not far off. 😀
