      • I have been assuming he is waiting to retire from the ATP first. For a few years now it has been looking that it may be a matter of only a few short years (alas) because of the uncertainty regarding his knees. Since his 7 month break and the fabulous year last year his retirement is not looking that imminent any more. Still, how many of us here at tenngrand expect him to play for more than another 3 years? 4 max? If he made it to 4, aged 31 going on 32 I would be extremely suprised… and happy for him.

      • @nadline28, I hope the following article persuades you to stop nagging Rafa to be a parent:

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2626627/Roger-Federer-action-just-six-days-birth-twin-boys-Italian-Open-looms.html

“However, if he is to add to his tally of 17 Majors he is going to have to make more history, certainly by becoming the first man to claim one of the sport’s biggest prizes when the father of four children.

In fact, the record suggests that the distractions and joys of parenthood do not go with carrying off the most important silverware — even when you are blessed with having any amount of money to throw at the logistics of childcare like Mr and Mrs Federer do.

Normally having just one child seems to have the tendency to shave the edge off a champion, as evidenced by the fact that of the 95 men’s singles Grand Slam titles won since the 1990 French Open only seven of them have been won by parents.

Federer is on the list courtesy of winning Wimbledon 2012, and you would not put it past him to repeat that this year, especially given the uncertainty surrounding his most potent rivals.”

NB: Since becoming a father, Fed has won only ONE Slam….

“That is not a true definition of RWTHHWTH when patriotism is involved.”

So you think he supports Andy out of duty but he is a true Rafa fan?

    • ^^Just finished watching this, very informative. 2 take aways:

      1. Lubicic says there’s method to Rafa’s “time-wasting” in between points: he says Rafa deliberately slows down the tempo of the match to stretch the match time because the longer the match goes, the more vulnerable you are to lapses of concentration. He says Rafa himself, because he is mentally so superior, then would be at an advantage the longer the match goes. Must say, this is the first time I am hearing this theory. Luby says Rafa’s biggest strength is not his physicality, it’s his mentality.

      2. Lubicic again says the big sizr of Court Chatrier gives Rafa an advantage because it neutralizes serves. In Chatrier, Rafa is able to stand miles away from the baseline and that way, get to every serve and return it. Because of the topspin he puts on the ball, he is able to hit hard from way out from the baseline and bring the ball in with the top spin. This is an interesting theory as it suggests why Rafa would be susceptible to being aced at say, Rome and why he would more likely have more errors there.

      Fascinating.

      • Other players do not have the topspin advantage that Rafa has, @nadline10. Without the topspin and they hit as hard as Rafa does from the same distance from baseline their shots would sail over the other side’s baseline.

It’s their fault, of course, not Rafa’s.

      • Lubicic at one point in this doc says that Rafa probably understands the game better than anyone. (strategy, tactics.)

Two others explain how being right-dominant in his every other way including his eyes, while playing with his left hand makes him more prone to not only take the ball later but as a result play a more tactical game rather than a counter-attacking game.

This doc nicely puts together the whole package that is Rafa as an exceptional tennis player.

Two of the most interesting bits, among many: at age 8 he didn’t show any outstanding raw talent (I think this was meant coordination wise and such) but showed the mental attitude of going after the ball with his whole body already, ie the fighting giving-it-all spirit. And: Tony mentioning that his main asset was how teachable he was, how able to learn…. which opened so many more options as a result later after years of practicing/learning.

  3. Enthralling film. Thanks for bringing that one to our attention.

Ljubicic has never been a big fan of Rafa and has been peddling that time-wasting theory ever since he was beaten by Rafa at RG. He was bitter at being outplayed by a 19 year old. Time he got over his chagrin.

I was at RG for the semis and remember feeling rather short changed. First there was a long rain delay, next Nalbandian retired in the 3rd set against Federer and then Rafa dispatched Ivan in straight sets.

    • Oh Gussie, I promise one of these days I am gonna die from the vapours with these Rafa pictures you insist on postin’……

      Not complaining mind, no ma’am………

  4. Thank for the Doc. augusta.

Never before has so much been said about one tennis player. There are more documentaries celebrating Rafa than any other player.

      • Rafa’s game has spawned a whole industry devoted to solving how to beat him.
Huge pressure on Uncle Toni and Rafa trying to stay one jump ahead as players suss out ways of neutralising his strengths. No wonder Rafa has been stressed this year and UT wears such a grim expression during matches..

An interesting point that came across is how much input Rafa has and UT’s respect for his tennis brain. He is not the Svengali figure he is sometimes portrayed to be. Cant wait to see what they have hatched up together for RG.

  5. That is lovely from Rafa. A class act all the way! I am so happy that Rafa has expressed his support and congratulated Novak on his efforts to help the victims of these floods in his country.

That’s why I love Rafa! A generous, kind heart and spirit! 🙂
