  1. Which tennis complex will be named after Rafa when he retires. They have honoured Sanches-Vicario and Santana but Rafa deserves much more that a court named after him.

  2. Darren Cahill ‏@darren_cahill 18m
Nadal played 19 matches post @USOpen to secure #1 spot last year. Most ever. 2 early exits maybe a blessing. Clay season starts now for Rafa

Most amount post US Open for Rafa. Early Jan win + Aussie Open final. Lot of tennis for a guy who does well off rest. Madrid/Rome true tests

    • ^^Thanks for this @hawkeye63. An analysis of Rafa’s Fall 2013 exploits based on FACTS, and conclusions thereof. Rafa was a beast in Fall 2013. No wonder his back gave up at AO 2014.

      Vamos!

    • It’s easy to speak in hind-sight. Having said that, too bad Rafa didn’t play a little less and was perhaps spared the bad back just at the AO. If he had been hale in the final very few, among millions, believe that Wawa would have prevailed. After completing his second career slam he could have had the back give out at some tournament, any tournament in February or March. It would have been nice :-).

      • ^^20-20 hindsight indeed. But as I remember @chloro, coming into Wimby Rafa thought he had a good chance to make headway on the #1 ranking there. When he was knocked out in the 1st round he pretty much gave up on that possibility. Come the North American swing, the possibility opened up because of Djokovic’s slippages and the possibility REALLY became achievable after USO. It was only then you saw Team Rafa pivoting to getting the #1 ranking. I don’t think at that time AO was even on their radar screen.

        And then AO 2014 happened………………..

But I am hopeful. Things happen for a reason.

  3. In the long run it might be a blessing in disguise because last 2 years he was knackered by the time he got to Wimbledon.

    • These guys are not machines. Rafa played more matches than he has ever played in the fall, reached finals and semis of tournaments but that was not good enough for some.

Fair enough, second best is just that, second best. Novak was better than him in the Fall but……. why is he not in Madrid right now? They all get affected by over-playing, nobody’s perfect.

    • ^^^^More than knackered. He was utterly depleted both physically and emotionally. I remember how sanguine he was about that loss. One had the distinct impression the early exit came as a relief.

  4. First the refrain was Rafa needed to copy Fed’s schedule now it’s been he needs to copy Novak’s, like Rafa’s an idiot who cannot manage his own schedule, he needs to copy others’.

Hmmmm………maybe if Novak copied Rafa’s schedule his arm/wrist/hand would not complain so much………..

    • Snap, @chloro! Am just reading the article and came on this thread to post it when I saw you already had…………..

FINALLY, FINALLY, someone tries to be logical with the GOAT debate ! Agassi has now leaned towards rafa !

“I’d put Nadal number one, Federer number two,” the eight-time Grand Slam-winner told Singapore’s Straits Times in an interview.

“Federer separated himself from the field for four years. He separated himself from (Andy) Roddick and (Lleyton) Hewitt,” Agassi added.

“Nadal had to deal with Federer, (Novak) Djokovic, (Andy) Murray in the golden age of tennis. He has done what he has done and he’s not done yet.”

“He has won multiple (majors), every single one (more than once) except the Australian Open — and give him another year on that,” Agassi said.

“It’s just remarkable to me what he has done, and he has done it all during Federer’s prime.”

All of Agassi’s reasons make sense, totally. However, I am keeping my powder dry waiting for Rafa to amaze us further, because amaze us further he will, in a manner that will leave his GOAT-hood indisputable.

This is where AO 2014 hurt for me because I thought snagging AO 2014 was the separator, the Slam that would have made him undisputed GOAT even still lagging Fed in Slam count. That is water under the bridge now.

I have a sneaky feeling he will surprise us this year………….

      • Aw c’mon @hawkeye63, someone has to be the GOAT curmudgeon, no! I think @vamosrafa would have a better chance of being heard on Roger-x blog than me, I am in perpetual moderation!

I agree with Agassi but there will be someone arguing otherwise. Very soon, Rafa will put himself in a position where even the curmudgeons will not have a leg to stand on.

      • All posts from new posters are automatically moderated as you know.

Well, I have just tried under a new moniker “An Inconvenient Truth” but doubt that it will see the light of day. My expectation is that at the very least it will inspire a blog article from our favourite “LaMonf” fan.

Wonderful article BTW vamosrafa. Made my morning.

      • Yes it’s a fantastic article, thanks @vamosrafa.

@hawkeye63, I no longer post on Fed-ex blog, just not worth the aggravation. I get it that they do not want Rafan voices (except Stepford wives) to be heard. It occurred to me the silliness of trying “to force” Sean Randall to listen to me when clearly he does not want to! He is entitled to only listen to those voices he wants.

  6. RT @christophclarey: “Brave man Andre Agassi, wading into the greatest debate: “I’d put #Nadal No. 1, #Federer No. 2” http://nyti.ms/1hzHlkY #tennis”

Now watch the vitriol that will be directed at Agassi………………..

    • … and the NY Times
      … and @christophclarey

So many tennis greats both past and present are coming to the realization that Rafa is the GOAT!

  7. Yes, great article quoting Agassi.

Yes, it IS too bad about the back injury, lest Rafa would have had at a relatively young age an Olympic single gold, positive H2H against virtually anyone, two career slams, 14 slams and heaps of confidence to get another slam or two this year. As always, it is his fairly numerous injuries that have been the one main obstacle. Roger was a strong obstacle half of the time in the first years, Novak was a major one for a year and a half and since then is still almost as major a one, but it is the injuries that have almost always made the difference between different years. A few fewer major injuries and his achievements to date would have been even more impressive.

Finally, as I like to repeat, the achievements of the top women of the last few decades are even more astounding than the men’s.
