  2. Fairly balanced draw IMO. Perhaps Fed with the toughest quarter and certainly the toughEST overall (if Rafa is 60% or better).

(please, anyone, let me know if you need an explanation of how the -est suffix is used.)

  3. I think Rafa has a good draw to the quarterfinals. Dimitrov is the only one that got my attention. Then Fed and Murray could meet in the quarterfinals. So Rafa will only play one of them. All in all, it’s decent.

I also think that Novak has a tricky draw. Isner, Gulbis, Fognini. Cilic as a possible first match opponent. He could face Stan in the semis. I don’t think he has a cakewalk at all. Fed seems to have gotten all the Spanish players. Also Tsonga again. Stan has a good draw. Nishi or Raonic in the quarterfinals.

I am really looking forward to seeing Rafa again. His words are encouraging.

  4. I just happened to check out good old tennis-x. Wonder of wonders, Sean Randall has picked Rafa to win Madrid! 😉

  5. 1st round match-ups from heaven (or hell, take your pick):

    Fognini v. Dolgopolov;
    Gulbis v. Janowicz,
    Paire v Simon.

  6. Well what do you know! Tignor is back on board, picking Rafa to win the Madrid final over Wawa! He predicts Wawa will beat Novak in the semis. 😎

  7. Hello people… Good draw for rafa !I hope he gets monaco in the first round… Dimitrov as a potential qtr finalist is quite a challenge given the uncertainy surrounding rafa these days… if rafa can beat dimitrov/berdy and get enough confidence, I think he’l have enough to overcome federer (who’s path to the semi is also not easy)…

If novak’s wrist is still causing any issues or he lacks confidence due to it, then gulbis could be a difficult challenge for him… Ferru vs Djo is always tough and you cannot completely rule a fresh ferru (remember he got knocked out of barca much earlier this time) against a potentially hurt novak ..

Wawrinka vs Novak would be a cracker if it were to take place !

A nice ,balanced draw…. Rafa has the best one IMO….and I don’t think novak’s wrist will proffer further issues..

  8. vamosrafa,

Good to see you back here! Just in time, right before the start of Madrid. I am feeling good about Rafa’s draw. It’s interesting that Madrid was the one clay tournament where I initially thought Rafa might not defend his points. Of course, that was before the clay season started. Now I think it would be ironic if this is where Rafa gets his mojo back. He will have his home fans cheering him on all the way.

I do think this is overall a balanced, fair draw.

    • haha, true ! we all are banking heavily on madrid now. The home support can surely furnish the much needed positive energy rafa needs…. At least rafa sounds a little optimistic now.. If he can play at the level he had in set 1 against almagro and stay tough in pressure moments, he’l win…

The problem is not with his shot-making, it is his inability to combat nerves and pressure situations. his biggest quality is evading him so the overall pressure on his game starts elevating. By far the most skilled clay court player in the world is failing to win routine matches just because he momentarily lacks the necessary mental fortitude. Tennis is so much more than pure skills…. there cannot be a bigger proof than this…

  9. Looking back with nostalgia to the days when we could all be relaxed about the draw – safe in the knowledge Rafa would be there in the final. And bite the trophy.
