I don’t watch many WTA matches but I make a point of trying to see Martina and Mirza whenever I can for the sheer pleasure of watching these two in action. They’ve forged an amazingly successful pairing and just lifted the St.Petersburgh Trophy.
Did you see her 3 set win over Serena in Toronto SF last summer? And she went on to Toronto – that was huge! I’ve been a fan ever since. She’s only 18, #11, and moving up. Her game doesn’t have the variety that Ninja has or Vinci has…yet. She’ll get there, you’ll see.
Following Dubai this week:
St.Petersburg winner Vinci and runner-up Bencic are joined by top four seeds: Muguruza, Halep, Suarez-Navarro, and Kvitova.
Madison Brengle already knocked out Ekaterina Makarova and will face 4th seed, Petra Kvitova, next round. Congrats Madison B.!
… and, Coco Vanderwhege is a set up on Karolina Pliskova.
Ana Ivanovic v Daria “Dasha” Gavrilova
Winner to play Simona Halep.
Jelena Jankovic v Belinda Bencic
Winner to play Andrea Petkovic
Big win for Coco Vandeweghe, 76 61 over 6th seed, Karolina Pliskova. Coco will face Kiki Mladenovic in her next match. Kiki and Coco – ๐ Wednesday match
The problem with following Dubai is having to listen to the endless drivel spouted by the asinine David Mercer. Poor Annabel Croft was co-commentator earlier today โ she struggled gamely but she was clearly ready to clock him one ๐
I would mute him but I really hate matches without sound at all.
Sad to watch Kuzetnova being mauled by Goerges: looks like the end of the road for her ๐
Glad I’m not alone. He reaches rock bottom when he is paired with Frew McMillan. When that happens I do have to hit the mute button!! Can’t believe he is still on the payroll.
I know I should be concenrating on the tennis but I’m mesmerised by Jelena’s weird outfit. She often wears the cut off leggings but the the effect is bizarre in black and yellow. Reckon Bencic is going to get the better of her.
Belinda Bencic was at her best 2 weeks ago when beating Kerber at Fed Cup. Was surprised she was playing Dubai – it’s the same amount of points as St. Petersburg – I know she’s probably high from getting inside the top 10 wants to keep it going, but she’s not as sharp.
Also have my eye on the Marseille scores. Simon might be in trouble. Pouille lost. Gulbis won! Pospy/ Kyrgios is next…
This first set tie break should never have happened. Simona had ample chances to win the set. Now Ana is in the mood to win and Simona is making too many mistakes. Ana can get distracted at any moment, it seems, and her level drops – the same is true about Simona. Some rallies are great.
Ana wins the tie break and has an early break in the 2nd set – that might be enough for Simona to give up, I fear. Ana is motivated now. Can she stay that way? The answer is no, lol…Simona breaks back 2nd set, 1-1.
Now Simona will drop serve?? break points for Ana…sheesh…
Sometimes watching these two I start to long for Belinda Bencic or Caroline Garcia to come along an put an end to it. It – being flakiness and waffling. Ana will get this win but Simona has helped Ana. What’s wrong with Simona isn’t clear. Physically she appears fine.
Barbora Strycova has a good chance next match v Ana Ivanovic.
#2 seed, Garbine Muguruza is out. Elina Svitolina, now being coached by Justine Henin, gets the win, 67 63!
What was supposed to be a straight set blow-out after winning set #1 6-0, Kvitova goes on to lose the 2nd set and is in trouble in the decider. Madison Brengle serving for the match and makes it! 0-6 76 63 holy smokes, Madison.
Battle is still on, 2 all, in a decider between Kiki and Coco.
All three men’s and the women’s tournaments are in chaos โ not helped by freaky weather. Makes it fun for the spectators and stay at home viewers like us.. Not so much fun for Ricky who has to stick his neck out making and justifying the predictions.
True for Ricky – would not want that job. You just never can be sure what the ambitions are of the top seeds. Nole returns for Dubai next week – that’s a serious 500 – and why I hesitate to pick Wawa, Berdych, and Gasquet for Marseille. But if it’s going to be simple to get through the draw, why not pick up the title? Wasn’t simple for Stan today, though.
WTA …well, it’s close to impossible. Had I tried picking winners for Dubai – I’d have it all wrong. Look at USO 2015 and AO this year. Crazy and exciting!

Roberta Vinci takes the 1st set at St.Petersburg.
Youth meets maturity.
That was so great from Roberta, ed. Very happy she got the Title!
Belinda has played so much tennis the past few weeks – even an 18 yr. old has to wear out sometime.
Next stop for both Vinci and Bencic is Dubai – Halep, Kvitova, and Muguruza will be there.

I don’t see Mirza and Hingis on the doubles draw. I’m missing Lucie Safarova paired with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
Bencic so overrated
?
?
okay.

A couple potentially good matches on the schedule for Tuesday in Dubai:

Ana Ivanovic v Daria “Dasha” Gavrilova

David Mercer is an obnoxious bore all of the time.
He’s by far the worst commentator of all time.
He’s at his utmost worst when he’s fawning over Federer. Sickening.
Glad I’m not alone. He reaches rock bottom when he is paired with Frew McMillan. When that happens I do have to hit the mute button!! Can’t believe he is still on the payroll.
Jaw dropping banalities from DM. Thank goodness for Annabel Croft.
Ana romping through this match. Up another break already in the first game of 2nd.
I don’t know who is whom of the Brit commentators. There is one however who makes me cringe more than this guy.
Annabelle Croft is fabulous, of course ๐
Missed Ana’s match. But I love watching JJ when she’s in the mood to fight.
Ivanovic has just meted out the same punishment that the hapless Kuzetnova received yesterday. A 6-1 6.0 loss
I know I should be concenrating on the tennis but I’m mesmerised by Jelena’s weird outfit. She often wears the cut off leggings but the the effect is bizarre in black and yellow. Reckon Bencic is going to get the better of her.
Really loving her outfit this time. And she’s such a great athlete – Jelena Jankovic.
Cheering for JJ to get this set.
Me too, in spite of the outfit! This could go either way now.

Took her 6 set points but she got it, did JJ.
Good match.
It doesn’t get much closer than this……………………..
It’s not over till the fat lady sings!
Gosh, it’s just too much for Belinda. Let he go home for a rest – poor kid.
Nice win for Jelena.
Simon lost ๐
Amazig match. Great win for JJ.
Sad to see Simon go out.
horrific loss. Good for Kyrgios.
Very.
Dubai will not take priority on Tennis Channel, I see. “Center Court” is on the schedule with ATP and WTA. That means – there’s no telling what will be on offer when I wake up. Oop for Dubai:
http://www.wtatennis.com/SEWTATour-Archive/posting/2016/718/OP.pdf
Hoping to see: Halep v Ivanovic and Muguruza v Svitolina.
Tennis TV showing Centre Court and Court 1. Be warned DM is commentating on Centre Court so I’ve switched to Court 1.
Agonising moment for rain and hail to arrive in Dubai. At the precise moment Garcia was serving for the match at 5-3 15-all in the decider.
She won. Caroline Garcia. – go Caroline! Just saw the very end. Millot and Mahut were on when I woke up. Rain delay in Dubai? That’s rare isn’t it?
Have been hoping their Fed Cup win would have a positive effect on Kiki and Caroline.
good win for the future world No. 1

A satisfying win for Ana. Wonder if this the beginning of a resurgence for her after too long out in the cold
Good stuff by Mrs. Schweinsteiger
Upset City! More top seeds in trouble.
#2 seed, Garbine Muguruza is out. Elina Svitolina, now being coached by Justine Henin, gets the win, 67 63!

Too excited to type. Svitolina over Kvitova in straight sets 76 63.
QF
Ivanovic v Strycova
Garcia v Petkovic
Errani v Brengle!
Svitolina v Kiki Mladenovic or Coco Vanderweghe
Surprise, surprise
