  1. I expect Ricky will post something about this soon but in the meanwhile Rafa has pulled out of both Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, saying it’s best for his body and he wants to extend his career as long as possible. Sad news, but not unexpected.

  2. I haven’t looked at anything to do with with tennis for weeks. But I looked up the news to do with Rafa today and found out he pulled out of Toronto and Cincy and is out for the rest of the year. I saw a video from him where he says the foot has been bothering him for a year and that he hasn’t been able to practice properly for a year! Well this explains a lot of things including his very shaky mental state at RG.
I have been saying for months that I felt there was an underlying physical problem which was feeding Rafa’s confidence issues. That’s how he got into that terrible state mentally in 2015 afterall. Yes, this year wasn’t as bad as that but I knew something was really wrong at RG.
Sending Rafa tons of love and luck.xxx There has never been a tennis player like him. ( or Fed for that matter).
Tennis without Rafa and Fedal is pretty slim pickings😥

    • I read some interviews with Moya. He said that some days they couldn’t even finish practice sessions because of the pain. Other days it would be fine. He said that on clay the pain was milder but intolerable on concrete. Obviously it must have been a real source of anxiety for Rafa and very distracting.
I thought it was pretty obvious that his foot was really impairing his performance in the RG sf from some time especially in the third set on. ( have said this before so it’s not being wise in hindsight).

  3. Rafa will be playing at Abu Dhabi this coming December, that’s good news. Hope everything turns out well for Rafa.

Also, Rafa will finish the year within top ten in both the rankings (24 months ranking system) and the race (counting only 2021 ranking points, Rafa is at no 10; 40 points ahead of Norrie).

I’m so glad Rafa still has this top ten record going on! Stays strong and gets better, our dear Rafa! Vamos!

Rafa is also going to play a tournament between the Abu Dhabi exhibition and the Australian Open, but on Monday (when he revealed his plans at the Babolat event in Paris) he didn’t know yet, which tournament.
An excerpt from his press-conference in Paris on Monday (He attended the inauguration of the Tennis-Point store in Paris):

I’m very happy Rafa will finish in the year-end Top 10 for the 17th time in a row! This is an impressive achievement!

      Vamos Rafa! 💪

    • Marc’s got a baby girl to support now! Rafa’s always loved having Marc around, so why not? Carlos and Roig aren’t full time coaches so I expect Rafa can use a third coach, even if Marc is mainly a glorified hitting/golfing partner. 🙂

      • Rafa has had the third coach for a long time. His third coach is a hitting partner more than a coach. Since the beginning of the 2019 season until recently, Rafa’s third coach was his long-time friend Tomeu Salva, who was Jaume Munar’s coach at the same time. Salva still works as a coach at Rafa’s academy and travels with Munar. I think, they rearranged things because Munar often plays Challengers and it became difficult for Salva to be a coach/hitting partner of the two players.

      • Very sad news about Manolo Santano.
We all know how close he was to Rafa. Like Rafa himself he seemed a really lovable guy.
        RIP Manolo.

  4. Yeah, hope Rafa gets well soon. I understand that those who recovered from COVID 19 have natural immunity against it for up to a year (a friend of mine who recovered from it was told by her doctor).

Rafa has his vaccination done so that’ll help him in his recovery. I just hope he will be physically well enough to return to the tour soon. Vamos Rafa!

    • People who had the delta variant are regularly falling sick with the new omicron variant which is causing an epidemic in the UK.
Also 2 doses have low protection against omicron. You have to have a booster as well. I got mine on Saturday after a very anxious wait. Omicron gets through vaccines and masks!
I really hope Rafa gets well soon…

    • Maybe better he doesn’t go!
He got injured there last year and that has happened several times before.
Also the stringent protocols last year meant players couldn’t practice and there were loads of injuries!
Presuming it’s the same this year so very risky…

  5. Tanika has just released a video of Rafa practising today on hard court. It’s great that Rafa is over his covid symptoms and well enough to practice.
If he is practising today on hard court that does raise the likelihood of his playing the AO. Although my guess would be that he is seeing how he feels on court before making a decision.
    Still great he is better.

    • Great news to hear that Rafa is practicing again! I am always nervous about the AO, considering the bad luck he has had there. Physically he probably still needs time to get into good form.

Just to know he is over Covid!

      • Nny, Genny has just posted to say that someone in the know has said Rafa is going to Australia tomorrow. Apparently he is playing the ATP event before the AO!!
I guess you must be happy Augusta!😀😀

        • amy AT 4:28 AM;

Thanks, but the tweet (from a fan who calls himself a RNA Agent) Genny retweeted doesn’t contain more info than the Instagram comment I posted. 🙂

          • There are now multiple press reports that Rafa is going to Melbourne shortly so it definitely looks like he is playing.
Wishing him the best of luck!! I am always nervous when he goes to the AO because he has had so many injuries…
            Vamos Rafa!!

        • Rafa needs to go to AO…enough of skipping tournaments ..time is running out. If he has to add a slam ,2022 looks like the last chance to do it ..

I hope he gets one slam atleast in 22 so that he is firmly at no 2 in goat if not no 1.

Btw I think Novak will underperform this year..maybe max one slam ..

Zverev may get one and then Medvedev one…

So yes maybe all 4 slams will get split

    • That doesn’t mean Novax has got his exemption. Maybe wishful thinking on his part…
We all know there is no medical reason for him not to be vaccinated
I don’t think he should get special treatment.

  6. Spanish airport set ‘to be renamed Rafa Nadal International’

British tourists flying to Mallorca this summer look set to touch down at Rafa Nadal International Airport.
Thousands of fans of the record-breaking 21-time Grand Slam winner have already backed an online petition calling for the airport to be renamed.

On Thursday, more than 7,000 people had already signed the change.org petition, launched by a Palma-based lawyer specialising in sports arbitration and an architect friend.

And overnight the region’s president Francina Armengol described the initiative as “positive”.

  7. If Rafa is healthy and plays wimby ,can he win it this year ? Lot of ppl play well on clay ,hardly anyone on grass except Djokovic n fed

    • I fancy his chances too.. the bad vibe at Melbourne was over this year.. I am hoping something like that. Wimby 2018 SF loss still hurts me more than all AO final loses.

      • If djoker plays it’s not necessary Rafa has to go through him n yes if he does win ,i hope it goes through Djokovic.

A Rafa djoko final at wimby with Rafa winning will be the perfect closure for most rafans n may seal Rafa unequivocally as the greatest of all time

        • The French health minister has said that if he is unvaccinated he won’t be able to play. As for the Land of Here, as things stand he could play but come July there is an excellent chance a new variant will be zinging around due to the lifting of all appropriate and sensible measures so that things will be tightened up again and they won’t let him in.
PS yes absolutely Rafa can win wimby! And yes he can beat Novax.
