  1. I have been tempted to watch my dvr recording of last year’s RG final with Rafa and Novak. I recorded the match again when the tennis channel replayed it during the holidays near the end of 2014. But I am afraid that it will make me even more sad.

This is the first time I can remember almost dreading watching RG. I would love to believe in miracles and that Rafa will be himself once he gets on the dirt at Chatrier. Unfortunately, I don’t think that we are going to see one this year.

RG is always the most important slam where Rafa is concerned. I know that it’s been great to see him win those nine titles. I never took any of them for granted. I have managed to survive the losses that Rafa has suffered this year. But to see him losing at RG is a whole other thing entirely. After all, he’s only lost once!

      • sanju,

Coming from one who has always been quite pessimistic, I am surprised. It’s all about keeping it real. No, I do not have any premonition. I am just basing my feelings on Rafa’s performance so far this year. He has never entered RG ranked outside the top four since he rose to the top. Since 2005, if we are to be precise. So this is uncharted territory.

Now that the draw is out, I feel even worse. The one thing he could not afford was to meet Novak in the quarterfinals. Rafa won’t be at his best.

It has nothing to do with premonitions, gut feelings or anything like that. I just don’t like Rafa’s chances right now.

    • If this had been anyone else you’d have accused them of being drunk on power and throwing their weight around. But carry on. :p It’s actually hideous the way Nadal is allowed to get away with his on-court thuggery. look forward to the day him and his ilk leave the game for good.

  2. Rafa is boss:

Paris (AFP) – Rafael Nadal received Paris’s most prestigious honour, the “Grand Vermeil” on Thursday, just days before the Spanish superstar opens his bid for a 10th French Open title at Roland Garros.

The 28-year-old was termed “the most Parisian of Mallorcans,” as he received the honour from Paris’s Spanish-born mayor Anne Hidalgo at the city’s Hôtel de ville.

“Nadal has marked and continues to mark the history of Paris,” said Hidalgo. “The history of Roland Garros cannot be written without Rafael Nadal.”

Hidalgo described the 14-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one as “an exemplary champion who has always maintained his humility”.

“He’s also a generous person who has forgotten nothing of his humility and doesn’t hide behind his fame.”

Nadal described Paris as the “most important city” in his career, and the one where he “came of age as a sportsman”.

“Roland Garros is tennis and Roland Garros is Paris,” he continued.

“But for me, it’s something special. This is the tournament that made me reach maturity, a life-changing moment for an athlete. And mine changed here in Paris ten years ago,” said Nadal.

“This title goes far beyond my success on the Philippe Chatrier court and it’s a great personal satisfaction for me.

“I thank those who have distinguished me with this medal which places me alongside important personalities belonging to the history of this city,” added the world number seven.

“It’s a great satisfaction for us,” his uncle and coach Toni Nadal said.

“Every time we come to Paris, it’s always special. When he was young, Rafael dreamed of winning here a few times. We were lucky enough to win nine times. We have spent a lot of time in Paris which is a very pleasant city for us.”

Nadal won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 2005 and last year added a record ninth on the Paris clay to his collection.

He was similarly honoured with a gold medal from Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at a ceremony in Madrid earlier this month.

  3. Should have been at least the quarter final! rafa would have had more time to build momentum that way. Anyway, it is what it is! A possible 4th rnd with Dimitrov (I hope this happens) and then Novak. Novak will reach the qtr without much trouble :/

      • May be! he definitely fears facing rafa at RG but deep down he also knows this is his best ever chance. He also said in a recent interview that he is aware rafa raises his level as the tournament progresses so….

The thought of facing rafa in the qtrs of RG is DAUNTING but if novak realizes that in order to win RG, he has to overcome rafa anyway then things will be a little simpler for him.
