^^Well done Rafa, hopefully that’s the end of that. This is not the time to be making major changes in the coaching department. We know how disastrous the timing for the racquet change was.
Any change needs to be after wimbledon before hard courts. Agassi went though a mid career crisis but he is too busy and IMO the personalities don’t fit. Darren Cahill would be a calming force but he’s hesitent to commit – maybe part time? I don’t see Rafa going with an American TBH. Different cultures.
It’s a difficult one for sure but it is time for some change. It has been too long where he has not been at his best more often than not even before his recent health triad of problems.
What would you rather see @hawkeye63, Uncle Toni sacked and a new coach in his place or an addition to the current team, say, someone with specific duties such as serving coach or psychological guru whatever you want to call him her?
I honestly do not see Rafa having any other coach…not that I would not like him to have someone in addition to Toni, some new ideas or new expert opinion…I do think he could benefit from some change but nothing revolutionary…a new coach is exactly that and it would take time for Rafa to adjust to it…I fully agree that Americans would not work but I also think it would hurt Toni to have another Spaniard on board…so for the time being he should leave it as it is…if he really fails to reach his top form then he himself will realize that he either quits tennis or decides to do something about it…
I don’t see Rafa having any other coach. There were some links posted, I am not sure if it was VB or not. But Rafa was quite firm when asked about possibly getting a new coach. He said that it’s on him. He’s not making any changes.
Rafa seems to be loyal almost to a fault. I also agree that it wouldn’t be an American. Two different cultures. There is a reason that Rafa has his Spanish people around him. He’s comfortable with them and there is a great deal of trust.
I can’t see any changes at this time. There’s too much tennis going on. However, no matter what we think I just do not see Rafa making any changes of any kind. I agree about having a new face and maybe a different perspective. But what we want is not necessarily what Rafa wants.
The Spaniard, a seven-time champion at the Foro Italico, strongly rejected suggestions that he should consider removing Toni Nadal, his uncle, as coach.
“If things are not going well it’s because I am not playing well,” he said. “Not because of the coach.”
Nadal added that he would never fire his uncle.
“No. It’s not only my decision,” he said. “That’s a decision of two people, not only one. Don’t forget that Toni is more my uncle than my coach.
“If in any moment of my career I change some member of my team, it will not be because I am losing or winning,” Nadal added. “It will be because there is not enough motivation for one another.”
Nadal has had the same staff his entire career.
“And I don’t think my career is a bad career,” he said. “If I’m not playing that good today, it’s not because they’re not doing the right job.
“I don’t know if I will be with my uncle until I finish my career because I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Nadal added. “I cannot predict what will happen tomorrow. But I’m not thinking about changing my coach today.”
Thanks so much for posting this! I made a comment above about reading Rafa’s comments regarding not changing coaches. You posted what I read somewhere. That’s the one! 🙂
Rafa appears grounded, it’s us his fans who are frazzling about his current form, not him. Novak Djokovic appears to be lining up an excuse if he, again, fails to win in Paris. Lst year he lost because, apparently, he had a stomach virus, according to his fans.
Djokovic was not shaken but stirred into life at the finish. He revealed he also has some discomfort in his right arm, which appeared to manifest itself towards the end of the first set. “It has been bothering me last couple of days,” he said, adding puzzlingly, “but it’s not worrying me.”
I think Rafa has it about right. The worst thing that he could do is let the pressure to win manifest itself in desperation. I think Team Rafa realizes the road to recovery is long, patience is key.
At this stage, the pressure to win RG is completely off Rafa the way I see it. It is on Novak and yes, Muzza now. Novak, for the perennial pressure he puts on himself and Muzza, the pressure from the British press. They are already calling Muzza Novak’s biggest challenge at RG!
“Why Andy Murray can upset Novak Djokovic and win the French Open”
Andy to win RG??! Sorry, that is just plain delusional…By beating Rafa in Madrid Andy suddenly becomes the clay guru…that is ridiculous…If Rafa runs into Andy at RG he will run over him…
I am thinking…if Rafa by any chance (highly unlikely judging by the current form, but you never know) wins Rome will journos, those so called tennis experts and the pundits change the tune and declare Rafa favorite to win RG…I hope not…I do not want additional pressure on Rafa…

What a beautiful picture!
Vamos Rafa!
Vamos Uncle Toni!
I think this picture is a subtle message from Rafa to those baying for Uncle Toni’s hide because of Rafa’s poor form: Uncle T ain’t going nowhere.
He did the same thing one time when he had a series of bad losses under Roig’s watch, Rafa flatly said Roig ain’t going nowhere.
love your post! Vamos indeed!
Why does Rafa wear 2 watches? So dorkish!
ritb, you saw that tweet about time violations too, no? 🙂
@hawkeye63, aha!
Poor Rafito, doesn’t want to risk being violated by Tio Toni by being late for practice!

^^Well done Rafa, hopefully that’s the end of that. This is not the time to be making major changes in the coaching department. We know how disastrous the timing for the racquet change was.
However, I think Rafa could benefit from a new voice on the team, in addition to the current, not in replacement thereof.

An addition. Toni still has a place for sure.
I think the addition should be an ex player but can’t think of who. Don’t think that JMac is a good choice.

Not a Spaniard either.

My sense has always been that if Rafa makes a change in the coaching department it will be because Toni himself has resigned, not been fired.
In any case, I cannot think of anyone who would fit into the unique family-knit set-up Rafa has around him.

I just hope you’re not comparing Rafa with Federer and Berdych. Don’t you? Or do you.
