According to the research presented by Bergeron (2008), several factors may be involved with causing muscle cramping in dehydrated athletes with sodium deficits. These factors directly affect the body’s sodium content. They include:
• Sweat rate of the athlete
• Sweat sodium concentration of the athlete
• Dietary intake of the athlete
The importance of these factors is that they are absolutely unique to the individual athlete. Some athletes are prone to cramping and others are not. The answer lies in the factors listed above.
Some athletes just sweat a lot. While performing the same level of activity, some athletes will be dripping with sweat and others will be relatively dry. This can be seen in both genders. If an athlete has a high sweat rate during activity, this athlete may be susceptible and be at greater risk for muscle cramping.
Sweat sodium concentration is another factor that is unique to the individual athlete, that is, the amount of sodium contained in the athlete’s sweat. Some athletes have a high sweat sodium concentration. These athletes may actually leave salt residue on their skin or clothes after a workout. If an athlete has a higher sweat sodium concentration, this athlete may also be susceptible and be at risk for muscle cramping.
Although other electrolytes are lost in sweat, their concentration and consequent total loss via sweating is not enough to prompt muscle cramping or other problems. The electrolytes most commonly blamed for muscle cramping include calcium, magnesium, and potassium. However, the review of the literature by Bergeron (2008) did not substantiate any of these electrolytes as possible causes of muscle cramping.

Rafael Nadal collapsed on the floor of the main interview room with cramp, an hour after going through to the fourth round of the US Open with a straight-sets win over David Nalbandian that lasted two hours and 39 minutes in searing midday heat.
The world No2 had finished answering questions from Spanish journalists when he grabbed at his right leg and slid slowly back in his chair to stretch out, grimacing in pain. He grabbed at his leg, called for water as concerned officials gathered round and sat for several minutes on the ground, where he received treatment. His leg was massaged and he was given ice and fluids before being helped to his feet.
“I just have cramping in my leg,” Nadal said, sounding a little short-tempered when officials asked him to make a statement on his condition. “That’s all. There are no questions. I already finished my press conference in English. I talked half an hour. I just have cramping in front and behind. That’s why it was so painful. That’s all.

Andy Murray has accused his critics of double standards in the wake of Rafael Nadal’s dramatic comeback win over American Tim Smyczek in the Australian Open second round.
The 27 year-old Scot was back on the practice courts on Thursday ahead of his own third round against Joao Sousa, but before that he took to Twitter and took a pointed swipe at reaction to the Nadal win, which saw him come back from cramps to survive in five sets.
‘When I cramped and won in the US Open last year I was a “drama queen, unfit, needs to see a shrink, faker” weird…’ he posted.
@nadline10, you obviously are not on top of things regarding Rafa if you think stomach cramps are muscle cramps and Nalbandian in 2011 is “recent” so maybe you should brush up on the facts first before jumping in.
I’m disappointed in you @nadline10. You seem to know more about Roger’s chest hair than Rafa himself.
Next thing @nadline10 will be telling us is that Rafa has had several “recent” SF losses on clay! Including the previous one just the other day in 2003!!!!
Rafa said himself after his match against Fognini in Rio that he hasn’t had a problem with cramping during matches in his career. The examples cited are one-offs, such as the one when he collapsed during the post-match press conference at the USO a few years ago.
At that time it was said that this happens to the players very often after matches, but the world doesn’t see it. Andy Roddick spoke up at the time saying that they go through this after a match but it happens in the locker room and off court. So what happened to Rafa then was not unusual.
There may have been some rare instances of cramping after a match, but Rafa does not as a rule cramp during matches. His fitness on court is legendary.
So you didn’t know that Rafa had cramps against Smyczek, nor the fact that he had cramps at a press conference in 2011. You are so keen on discrediting Rafa that your memory fails you.

I don’t think anyone is attacking anyone. Just annoyed at seeing their favorite player not believing in himself. Especially when we know how good he is and he doesn’t. Toni tells him all the time he’s not talented, other players are better etc, and it shows. Toni made Nadal as successful as it is, but Nadal’s game is no longer revolutionary, neither is it conducive to his career continuing much longer after this year.
I haven’t been to that site for a long time, the Nadal hate there is unreal. Please don’t tell me MichaelNadal is being attacked and labelled as ‘untrustable’ Rafa fan. I agree with him about being annoyed at seeing Rafa not believing in himself, yes, Toni Nadal is mostly responsible for Rafa’s success, but the mentality that Rafa is ‘not talent or good enough’ that he had injected into Rafa is the reason for his lack of confidence and belief in himself, it is very frustrating to see this crept into Rafa’s mind and affected his play.
Some of you will remember the discussion we had a couple of times on whether or not uncle Tony was a kind of bully while Rafa was growing up. He has done immense good for his nephew but you have got to wonder whether he might have helped the young boy turn into as successful a competitor with less of that cutting down in size stuff. I read Rafa’s (auto)biography a few years back and that book doesn’t shed much light on this particular topic even while it is very open about just about everything in his life. It does talk about as an adult Rafa makes all his own tennis and other decisions regardless of Tony’s views, but that’s an entirely different thing from the mindset he grew up with.

Other than his loss to Fabio “Vamos” Fognini, when else has Rafa cramped recently?
If I’m not mistaken it was just a one off event for a variety of reasons.
Humidity and lack of play being the main two.

So you didn’t know that Rafa had cramps against Smyczek, nor the fact that he had cramps at a press conference in 2011. You are so keen on discrediting Rafa that your memory fails you.
