  1. Congrats Muguruza! Slam Champion now! At least Spain has a Slam Champion this year so far. Serena’s no.22 just has to wait.

    Well done to both.

  2. Brave performance by both. Has to be disappointing for Serena today, but I’m so happy for this new GS Champion!

      • lol, Simona is still my #1 favorite but I go back a forth. And Garbine is a breath of fresh air!
I want to say Rafa will be back; he’s got another comeback in him, amy. But I’ve been overly optimistic before on here. (truly think he isn’t done, tho)

        • well this is very hard for we rafa fans as he got injured just as his real game was coming back. he definitely had a shot to win! rg isn’t the same without him…
          # keeping the faith…

  3. anyone else reminded of a certain spaniard when they play the national anthem?? please please come back rafa and win slams…

    • So happy for the delightful Garbine. But it brought tears to my eyes when they played the Spanish National anthem to know Rafa won’t be hearing it played for him tomorrow.

      Vamos to the Spanish boys

        • This is the second best RG with last year being my favorite. For the women this was awesome to see a new champion. Vamos Mugu.

          • Cant imagine a rain filled messed up FO can be the second best RG! The only saving grace is Muguruza winning the women’s title for the first time and her first slam title.

To me the best RG was 2008, when Rafa was at his best sweeping everyone aside almost effortlessly, hard to see such awesome tennis on clay again, at least not in the near future. Also, sweet Ana won her first and only slam there that year.

          • If you had said your favorite RG was 2008 I could understand because that was Rafa’s peak of clay tennis. But no way can a 6-1,6-3,6-0 wipeout of a useless clay court player who was looking ahead to Wimbledon be the final for the best year. Last year was the best because Stan exceeded Rafa’s best in beating an excellent clay court player who was trying desperately to win his first RG.

  4. Spain is also going for the men’s doubles title; what a shame Rafa wasn’t able to complete his bid for his 10th RG title.

    Get Well Soon, Rafa!

          • So garbine did it! I will have to wait and see it on the replay. Well done to her! She had very dinky realized her potential. Nice to see a first time slam winner in the women’s game.

It woul have been hard to hear the Spanish national anthem and know that it was not going to be for Rafa

I am thinking of him and hope that he recovers soon.

          • The words “very dinky” in my last post were a garbled mess from autocorrect. I meant to say that she has realized he potential!

Muguruza said one of her first thoughts after winning the title was: How could Rafa have won nine of these?

    • Awwwhh! Sweet of Garbine to think of Rafa when she won!

Indeed, I don’t think anyone will ever be able to do what Rafa did st RG. A testament to enduring greatness!

  6. RT @BenRothenberg: Incredible last point for Muguruza, and fitting. Just when you thought she would miss, it was on the line, surprising even Serena. #RG16

Ben gets it. Don’t you ? Or do you.

  7. At last the French have something to cheer about. Thanks to their women players.

Garcia and Marakova win the doubles.
