BATennis World, June 19, 2015: ¤¤ Spain is broken.
With less than a month to go before the Davis Cup play-off tie [in Vladivostok, Russia], the panorama is dark: no team is available, the players have decided to boycott, and Gala León does not show herself.
… Gala León does not speak with the players, does not go to the tournaments, nor does she appear to have the wish to get closer to the players. She has not spent even a day in Paris, claiming “personal issues”; neither did she speak with them in her hometown of Madrid, and she did it even less in Barcelona. To this day, in Spain, the captain figure, which is vital in order to build the group’s unity and form a real team, is non-existent. León does not show herself, does not call the players, does not meet with them, and there are two camps: the RFET on one side, and the players on the other.¤¤

^^This is very sad. I always said there was more to this than the “sexist” chestnut which this woman, Gala Leon was brandishing to the world. Whereas one ALWAYS saw past reigning Spanish DC Captains in the players’ boxes during ATP tournaments and Slams, I have never seen Gala Leon at any of the tournaments. This is telling………..
Well, maybe she does not need the players, maybe she will win DC for Spain on her own………….
why doesn’t Leon just resign. her position is just untenable, so why continue….so she can say that she is some kind of feminist martyr? she’s a narcissist…..
Even if David, Feli, Nando et al all say they don’t want to play then you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be ‘sexist’ rafa who will be singled out for blame….
if they can’t play davis cup how are they going to qualify individually to play olympics next year?? it’s not fair on them…..they’re the ones who have put in the work and are the real professionals…..
This might sound cynical but the date for the Davis Cup was known long ago and wedding are organized with plenty of time, so it makes me wonder whether the wedding date was perhaps set deliberately on that weekend. Or perhaps… there are not many other free weekends between tournaments before the North American swing starts…
Why are you pussy-footing around the subject? The key players were up in arms when Leon was foisted on them without any prior consultation. It’s more than likely they decided to boycott DC. You are right: Feli’s decision to tie the knot when he did provides the perfect smokescreen.
what’s your take on the Olympic ramifications? The spanish players must have taken this into account and decided it was a powerful weapon in their armoury before deciding on the boycott.
I think, Feli’s personal life is more important to him than the Olympics & DC.
David Ferrer, Tommi Robredo and Fernando Verdasco chose to rest instead of playing at Davis Cup already last time (in Sept. 2014).
I don’t think that Rafa is going to boycott the Davis Cup, because: “To be eligible to compete in the Olympic Tennis Event at Rio 2016, all athletes must be in good standing with their National Association and the International Tennis Federation.”

[Question:] How disappointed were you when your tenth title at the French Open in Paris missed?
[Rafa:] I’ve missed this year, but I’ll try in the next few years to win this title again. …
.
[Question:] Have an idea of how long you want to continue to play at this level? “Another ten years”, raises his manager Benito Pérez Barbadillo.
[Rafa:] (Laughs) No, certainly not ten years. But I can not predict. I’m going to leave this world of tennis when I no longer have the motivation and if I feel that I no longer mithalte in competition.
.
[Question:] Can you imagine to travel with a family around the world, as Federer with children?
[Rafa:] No, I want to have children, but only after my career.
.
[Question:] Plan your wedding really?
[Rafa:] No, although I have eleven years with Xisca, the same girlfriend, but the wedding is not planned yet. ¤¤
getbucks, June 22, 2015: ¤¤ Rafael Nadal joins Boodles’ star-studded cast.
Patricio Apey, The Boodles tournament director and founder, said: “We are delighted to have received the phone call from Rafa which just adds to an already excellent line-up. We are happy to do whatever we can to help Rafa finalise his Wimbledon preparations here at The Boodles 2015.” ¤¤
BREAKING NEWS: Rafael Nadal to join superstar line up at The Boodles 2015
Fourteen-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will join Novak Djokovic as part of the star-studded line-up of tennis’ finest at The Boodles this week.
Nadal will feature at The Boodles 2015 to finalise his Wimbledon preparations on Stoke Park’s immaculate lawn courts .
Patricio Apey, The Boodles Tournament Director and Founder said:
“We are delighted to have received the phone call from Rafa which just adds to an already excellent line-up. We are happy to do whatever we can to help Rafa finalise his Wimbledon preparations here at The Boodles 2015.”
The Boodles 2015 held from 23rd – 27th June at Stoke Park provides the world’s best players with the ideal conditions to hone their grass court game and provides spectators with a unique tennis experience in an iconic location.
This year’s line up is a who’s who of the tennis world and includes some of the next big names to watch out for. Joining Djokovic are well known names like former Wimbledon semifinalist Richard Gasquet and marathon man John Isner as well as exciting young guns Jack Sock, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Alexander Zverev.
The Boodles guests will also be treated to a special appearance from Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanesevic taking on former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Cedric Pioline.
Rosol has just been introduced on court at Boodles known for winning the DC with the Czech Republic and the man who beat Rafael Nadal on Center at Wimbledon. Rafa needs royalties from these players who have made their name by beating him. Anderson has beaten Djoker but no mention of that. That tells me that Rafa is tennis.
The stupid continuity woman at Boodles has just said to Rosol: “we all remember you beating Rafael at Wimbledon, hope you can replicate that this year.” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Top Spain players deserted DC long before Gala Leon. No Rafa No Ferru in a long time for sure no?

Yep, it’s all Rafa and Ferru’s fault. How dare they not turn up for Spain’s DC ties and win like they did all those years? Like anyone cares about their personal career priorities and/or age………………..
Lol, and they think THEY should have been consulted about the choice of DC Captain? What a laff……..
Reuters, Jun 24, 2015: ¤¤ Spanish federation chief suspended amid cash probe.
The Spanish government’s disciplinary committee for sports (TAD) has suspended tennis federation (RFET) president Jose Luis Escanuela for one month for failing to collaborate in a probe into the organisation’s finances.
Spain’s sports council (CSD) says it is attempting to track down what happened to at least 700,000 euros ($783,300) that the federation, which lists Transparency International as one of its sponsors, paid out in transactions linked to the Spanish Tennis Foundation and the Spanish Tennis Observatory.
The Foundation was set up by the RFET to help promote tennis in Spain, while the Observatory is a joint project with a university in Seville to study the sport.
…
Escanuela, who has refused to step down, and the CSD have also clashed over the RFET’s appointment of Gala Leon as Spain’s Davis Cup captain, a decision that was sharply criticised by the nation’s top players like Rafa Nadal and Feliciano Lopez.
…
“What I am really concluding from this situation is that I am an icon in many countries but just not our own,” Leon was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
Spain’s doubles specialist Marcel Granollers responded ironically on Wednesday on his Twitter feed.
“I didn’t know that Gala Leon was an icon in many countries,” he wrote. “Can anyone tell me which ones?” ¤¤

hawkeye needs a lesson in reasoning. If let us say Djoker has the best ROS, then how come his ROS points are lesser than Ferrer’s or Rafa’s or Andy’s. Do you mean to say it LOOKS beautiful? If so I have nothing to say. But if you mean it is effective, then as the first return shot is part of the point, how come Djoker has won less points? . Now when we say somebody has the best serve, don’t we measure it by how how many 1st and 2nd service points he wins and how many service games he wins? Can somebody be deemed to be the one with the best serve if he is lagging others in both 1st and 2nd serve points won and service games won? Really ? And when it comes to ROS, vr aka “confused Mary” and hawkeye aka Fed bore expect us to believe it cannot be measured and you can say anybody has the best ROS because vr says so. They are simply talking through their hats which no doubt have lots of space to talk through.
While both Rafa and Federer’s ROS is not quite as good as a Nole or an Agassi, they more than make up for it AFTER the ROS turning defence into offence. For example, many times Federer is just happy to chip the ball back into play because he knows once the point has started, he can quickly turn the point around to his advantage.
Hope this doesn’t confuse you even more (although I think that particular ship sailed a long time ago.
