  1. Sunday:
Can’t wait for these two matches!
1.) Angelique Kerber vs Petra Kvitova.
Petra is holding up better than I expected. Kerber vs Kvitova h2h is tied at 4-4. Feels like it could go either way at this point. And I’m having scenes of Kerber getting tight in Cincinnati and in Rio in my head. Seven of eight times that they met, it was close. The last time they met was in Stuttgart last spring and Kerber won easily in the decider but she wobbled in the 2nd set. Petra is stronger right now than she was last spring. Could be close.

2.) Madison Keys vs Caroline Wozniacki. It won’t surprise me a bit if Caroline wins. They have never met. Caroline has had her best GS results at USO – two finals and two SF’s, W/L record: 29/9. Madison is the odds favorite but not sure how she’ll handle the pressure. Caroline is in comeback mode and swinging freely. I’ll be happy for Madison to prove me wrong.

    Johanna Konta over Anastasija Sevastova
    Roberta Vinci over Lesia Tsurenko

    • Yup. Well maybe. I just tuned in. It is surprising. Sevastova right now is choking a little but Konta can’t serve atm. She’s just not up to the task. Talk about a dark horse, Sevastova. Huge result for Sevastova to make a GS QF! The highest ranking she’s ever had was #36 back in 2011. Then she faded and disappeared – this season emerging and rising to #48 right now. Wow can’t think how many points she’ll get off the top.

Match point for Sevastova and Konta comes up with a winner and a break point. Lord, Konta breaks back. Let’s see if she can hold serve.

  2. Match point on Konta’s serve for Sevastova. Deuce again. It’s tooth and nail, Konta’s trying to hold on. She does hold. 5-5 2nd set, miracle. But I think it’s something bothering her when she serves.

    • Hope Keys wins. Although I like Woz after the way she handled her breakup, I do not like her game. She doesn’t have a weapon and she refused to do anything about it, content to be a slam less #1.

      • It would be helpful for my bracket if Keys won. I’m not a big fan of either one in this match, tho.

Would like to see a good fight / competitive sets. But I kinda see Woz in command.

    • And stamina is one of Madison’s weaknesses, imo. She relies too much on her serve and forehand. Hope she takes away a positive from the loss and gets motivated work on speed, fitness, and movement.

  3. Wow, pre-USO, I did not see that coming but after winning two rounds, nearly anything was possible for her. Woz is back. Wozniacki vs Sevastova.

    • On paper this should have been a win for Keys, but Woz seems to have turned back the hands of time. The ESPN commies said that she was playing very much the way she did when she was #1.

She is looking very good now.

      • Caroline Wozniacki has dropped to #74 after her ankle injury and missing clay season. She was at her best around 2009-2011, then up and down, and she got extremely fit in 2014 made the Final at US Open and lost to Serena.

She’s dangerous suddenly! Kvitova leads h2h 6-5. Kerber leads h2h 7-5, Serena leads 10-1, tied with Simona, leads Aga 8-4.

  4. I am glad Woznacki is back to winning streak! I’ve always thought she could have done way better in her career and failed to realize her full potential…good to have her back!

  5. Monday USO Oh no!
    ? Simona over Carla
Venus vs Karolina Pliskova. I picked Pliskova. Venus looks strong. Odds are close:

    Serena over Shvedova
? Aga over Ana Konjuh but I’m very nervous about it. Aga almost lost and would have lost thier last match at Wimbledon had Ana not twisted her ankle, as Manwerty reminded me. I’m good at putting the blinders on and blocking out scenes like that.

I’m unable to watch until evening — will be keeping an eye on scores. Good luck to picks! Link to check bracket standings:

  6. Went down to the 3rd set TB, but Karolina Pliskova makes her first GS QF! Brave performance, so proud of her! Had to be tough out there with the crowd cheering for Venus.

  7. Sad for Aga. Well done to Ana Konjuh; impressive. I couldn’t watch the whole thing because I’m weak; it’s a tough loss for a favorite, I admit. That’s the way it goes. But I’m looking forward to the Ana Konjuh vs Karolina Pliskova QF.

    Tuesday QF’s:
    Kerber over Vinci, I think…
    Wozniacki over Sevastova
I keep picking against Sevastova and she keeps winning. It’s a surprise QF. Who would have guessed?

    • I was surprised at how meekly Aga went down to Konyuh. I know that you gave us a heads up that Ana could mean trouble for Aga. But to see Ana just controlling the points and dominating with her serve over the #4 player in the world, was really something.

      • Yeah I watched the first set and couldn’t take it. I love Aga. Just have to say Kudo’s to Konjuh 😉 Manwerty reminded me of their Wimbledon match, then I could see Ana going for it. But I never would have picked the teenager to go this deep, thinking others would knock her out. She was gunning for Aga!

If she beats Pliskova next ?

        • Well I want to see her best Pliskova! I am not so sure about that.

I think it just seemed too easy for Ana against Aga. Also, Aga’s serving was not good in that match. I just didn’t see the fight from Aga.

There is nothing like seeing an 18 year old playing like she’s got nothing to lose with all of the belief and confidence of youth!

    • Sevastova rolled her right ankle and needed a MTO. Wozniacki skating away way with the first set – 6-0 Woz. Maybe Anastasija can find something 2nd set. or not…

      • Yep it’s a shame. Poor Sevastova is still struggling. And I’ve come to appreciate her attacking game, the way she moves, strikes the ball, changes directions so well, has an pretty reliable serve…but unable to execute much at this point. She’s finally won a game!

The Caroline/Angelique semifinal could be a very good match tho.

  8. Big thanks to everyone who participated in the WTA Bracket Challenge game! Looking forward seeing everyone return for Australian Open 2017. Thanks sincerely, for saving me from playing by my lonely self :D. Congrats to everyone, first-timers, punters and experts. Hope you enjoyed it and gathered information and ideas for the next GS draw! ratcliff TG / jalep TX.

    Only two Quarterfinals left:

The first match will be 24 yr. old, seeded player, #11 Karolina Pliskova versus rising star teenager, #92 Ana Konjuh, and both are in their first GS quarterfinal! There’s a whopping 430 points for a GS QF in the WTA. And one of them will move on to the semifinal and receive 780 points. Karolina will rise to around top 5 on the road to Singapore, or a bit higher, depending how far she goes. Ana Konjuh will leap from #92 to #41 for making the QF and should she advance to the SF, will be close to or inside the top 30!

The evening QF is #1 Serena Williams vs #5 Simona Halep. H2h is Serena, 7 – 1 or 2, depending if you count the 2014 WTA Final, first rubber, which I do count! :D. The one time WTA counts is Simona over Serena, Indian Wells SF 2015.

  9. Welp, that was a disappointing performance from Ana Konjuh. She came out with lots of energy, raring to go vs Aga Rad last round and then completely lethargic today. Easy win for Karolina Pliskova. Congrats on her first SF! She’ll face Serena or Simona.

    • This is what happens so often when a dark horse gets through to the later rounds. Ana seemed to have nothing left and Pliskova had the answers. She made short work of Ana. Still a great tournament for this 18 year old.

I am really glad that I stuck with Pliskova to the semis. She has shown that Cincy was not a fluke.

  10. So far all 3 of the ladies QFs have been lopsided Konjuh didnt put up any fight today but it was still a great tournament for the 18 year old.
