World Tour Finals player profile: Novak Djokovic

DjokerTrophy
Season in review: Djokovic’s 2014 has been marked by highs (both on and off the court) and lows. Starting with the not-so-good news, the top-ranked Serb failed to complete a career Grand Slam with a French Open title–a real disappointment especially considering that he had taken down Rafael Nadal on clay a few weeks earlier in Rome. Djokovic also hit a real skid throughout the hard-court summer, losing early in Toronto, Cincinnati, and in the U.S. Open semis to Kei Nishikori.

Still, he is on course to finish the year as world No. 1 and is surging into London as the clear favorite. The Wimbledon champion, who survived five-setters against both Marin Cilic and Roger Federer to triumph at the All-England Club, is 13-1 this fall with titles in Beijing and Paris. The latter gave Djokovic four Masters 1000 winner’s trophies this season, as he preceded Rome by going back-to-back in Indian Wells and Miami.

Quotable: “It definitely encourages me that I have won the past four indoor tournaments in the past two years that I’ve played. I do feel very comfortable playing, returning, serving in these conditions. Two successive titles in London in the past two years give me reason to believe that I can do well. I’m excited because I think it’s one of the most spectacular tennis venues that we have. People in London love tennis and have appreciation for this sport. So I look forward to that.”
