Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will take on Hubert Hurkacz for a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Canadian Denis Shapovalov battles Karen Khachanov in the quarters.

(6) Roger Federer vs. (14) Hubert Hurkacz

Roger Federer was seeded to take on Daniil Medvedev in the quarters, but Miami Masters champion Hubert Hurkacz had other plans. It’s hard to imagine anyone predicting that the Pole would have such an impressive run at the All-England Club. After coming out of nowhere to win the Miami Masters, Hurkacz won one match in six tournaments coming into this fortnight. Since he got to SW19, he has been on legitimate tear. Going into the fourth round, he hadn’t even dropped serve.

Federer spent the first week at Wimbledon shaking off the rust of a pair of knee surgeries in 2020. He was wobbly in his first-round match against Adrian Mannarino. The Frenchman was forced to retire–an early casualty of the slick-as-ice courts–but not before taking two sets. Federer has gradually been getting better and looked much more himself in his two most recent wins.

No trio in the history of tennis has ever been as solid in the later stages of a tournament as the Big 3. Hurkacz is playing legitimately good grass court tennis right now, but Federer has found his groove at this point. The Swiss is playing on his favorite court at his favorite tournament in front of an adoring crowd. Hurkacz might snag a set or two, but it should be Federer advancing to the semis.

(25) Karen Khachanov vs. (10) Denis Shapovalov

Karen Khachanov comes into the quarterfinals off one of the most bizarre matches in Wimbledon history. The No. 25 seed was in a five-set battle with young American Sebastian Korda when the service breaks started–thirteen of them, to be precise. Korda held for 1-0, and from that moment, the two players traded service breaks in every single game until the American finally held for 8-8. There were 13 service breaks in total, six of which went against eventual winner Khachanov.

The Russian won’t have anywhere near those kinds of break opportunities against Denis Shapovalov. Unlike Korda, the Canadian has a monster first serve. He also comes into the match off an impressive straight-set victory over Roberto Bautista Agut. If Khachanov doesn’t take meticulous care with his own serve, he will find himself back in the locker room in short order.

Shapovalov is in better form and after the notable five-setter with Korda, fatigue may well be a factor for the Russian.

  1. Those picks look good. For sure, Hurkacz can win a set but I have enough evidence to suggest it could be 3-0. On face value you would think he would win at least a set having won Miami masters and not been broken all Wimbledon (and having just beaten Medvedev) but sometimes that doesn’t tell the complete story.

But to conclude, there’s a strong enough chance he will win a set.

  2. I can’t stand watching Hurkacz. His tennis is fine but he is so bland. It’s terrible watching Federer lose to this guy. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

  3. Federer is mediocre today so far.
Not going to judge him. But I don’t understand how a player of his calibre has such poor executions and shots selection. He’s doing everything wrong: serving averagely, returning weak, too many easy mistakes even on forehand and placing the ball to his opponents arm, instead of placing it in the open court. Also, taking the high risk volleys, when he could wait the ball to land and then choose where to hit it. Awful. Doesn’t deserve to win so far. And it’s quite late to recover. Break down in the 3rd. I could play Fed rn and win many points Sorry for arrogance.
He just alternated food performances with poor one. Can’t be consistent.
Hurcacz is solid. Too bad he was not on the other side of the draw.

    • Really sorry, Eugene. I haven’t seen any after match interviews but I’m guessing that age/rehab finally caught up with the Great One. But if Fed couldn’t beat Hurk, he wasn’t going to beat the Djoker.

I didn’t watch the match. Had a Bad Feeling about this, as Luke Skywalker would say.

  4. Thanks Ramara.
This is not how his fans want him to retire. Not by losing 0-6. This looked very very strange. He was not himself at all. Looked even worse than his worst performances here. Maybe you are right about the reason, but that was like a huge dip in performance from the match against Sonego. I’ll guess we’ll find out soon.
Anyway, if he decides to continue, he should play more tournaments on hard, not just the big ones and see how it goes.
Really curious right now if this was his last Wimbledon match.

  5. Gosh did not see this one coming, like everyone else wondering if this is the last time, we will see of Fed at Wimbledon ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

    • That was tough to watch. Fed should have won the second set. But he just seemed to have nothing left in the third set. The espn commies said He was looking up at his box. His movement was not there.

Itโ€™s one thing if you lose to somebody. But to lose this way to this guy, especially getting bageled in the third set was really difficult to see. I donโ€™t know what to expect after this.

Fed was not going to beat Novak. He seemed to be coming into form. I thought he got a break when Meddy lost.

I donโ€™t want to see him go out this way.

        • Yes. I really like Andy. You know how I was cheering him on to win that first slam. When you had to stop watching the fifth set. I kept posting and telling you he won!

Good times. I donโ€™t want to see Andy this way either. Itโ€™s horribly unfair that he had to have his hip replaced and it derailed his career. But there comes a time when you just have to let go and say good bye.

  6. So good to see Schap finally fulfilling his early promise. Has tightened up his game and is looking terrific. Love the way he fizzes with nervous energy on court.
Fed was shanking his forehand, when he does this he usually loses.

    • Fed was in another place today. When hes shanking his forehand it usually means his mind isn’t on the job.

  7. Agree about Shap it was a great match, one of my favourite matches this tournament, also loved the Kyrigios /Humber match, some really talented players coming through, looking forward to Barty/Kerber tomorrow should be a cracker๐Ÿ˜€

  8. Federer: It was tough, in the last few games I felt I am not coming back, which wasnโ€™t the case often here. Crowd and the ovations were fantastic, I am super grateful for the support Iโ€™ve been getting over the years.

    • Condolences to Fed fans today. Even if you are not his fan, this was hard to watch. For a man who has won 8 titles here, this was a tough day. It is hard to get old in sport. But it happens to all of them unless you walk out at the age of 26 like Borg.

I did not like seeing him in the third set getting blanked. I heard his press conference and he admitted that he was so tired he wanted to go to sleep. He was honest.

Fedโ€™s done it all. He has nothing to prove. I sure he wanted that title two years ago. That loss was tough in a very different way.

I feel for the Fed fans here. Eugene, you are always so great with your comments. Joe, you obviously line Fed and tennis. Benny, you manage to keep up with even the lower ranked players and love this sport. Should I include Al? I think he said he is a Fed fan.

      I feel for you guys.
      ๐Ÿ˜จ

  9. Really sorry Fed fans, especially Eugene and Benny.
Fed is losing to Father Time and there’s no disgrace in that.
But for those of us who respect and admire him it’s very tough to watch him losing 6-0 to a journeyman.
Maximum respect for Fed and his dedication to, and love for the game. He is an all time great๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ
We won’t ever see the like again of Rafa, Fed and Novak all playing in the same era…
