who ya got?
I don’t see Fritz beating Rafa.
For me the first four rounds are the biggest danger. If he gets to the latter stages he has a great chance to win.
Don’t see Fritz beating Felix for that matter.
But I would way rather Rafa plays Fritz than Felix.
I concur Amy, don’t c Fritz beating Rafa either! And yes, I would much rather Rafa play Fritz than Felix bcoz Felix plays his best tennis when he plays Rafa!!
I know I would love for Rafa to win another Wimby but even with a depleted field he still has a tricky draw. We all know not all the pics will be realized so I expect some dark horses, upsets and surprise performances. I would be happy if Rafa at least makes the final! So one match at a time, Vamos Champ!
Yes one match at a time Mona! 😀
I didn’t notice yesterday that Ricky has Sinner beating Alcaraz. I can’t really see that at least in part because Sinner is always getting injured. I like Sinner so hope he at least stays healthy…
Sinner not great on grass but Alcaraz unknown quantity also.
Lots of unknowns this year despite the reduced field…
Yes. Wouldn’t surprise me if Alcaraz goes out before the quarters.
There is much less expectation for him here which may help him.
I am a bit sceptical about Hubie. He may be coming here in form but he is erratic and I would again not be surprised if he goes out early leaving that quarter completely open. Novak could find himself with practically a free run to the final.
Just seen Hubie is down 2 sets.
Posting this next to my post yesterday saying he is erratic and could go out early.
Hubie going out first round is a disaster for many of us.
NoVax will give me a heart attack, and He is being mule-headed, as my papa would say. Just get the jab and play US Open series and Canada.
He said yesterday he wouldn’t get the jab. Pretty damn silly imo.
Meanwhile Struff has taken the first set.
R all the seeds on this side going out!?😀😉
Obviously I am not being entirely serious as Novak/x will win. Not sure about Hubie and Alcaraz.
Yeah, I was overly confident (maybe?) about Carlitos. There was a minute or two that I had the brawny German winning and probably would have left Struff winning; then, I remember five sets will give Carlitos an edge.
It makes me sound arrogant to assume so much.
Alcaraz down 2 sets to 1. But Hubie has mounted a comeback.
Apparently D. Fokina had 3 match points so looks like he choked.
I like the gutsy affirmation of FAA, Alcaraz, Sinner, Bublik, and Norrie….but I like Tpas to win!
Clay not his best surface. I’ve got him going out to Nick too.
Fritz over rafa ..that too in 5 joking ?
Goffin to the quarters? Apart from everything else, thought he was nursing an injury.
Can’t see Fritz beating FAA either.
Depending on what kind of mood he’s in, Nick could get to the quarters or implode in the first round.
Hope the British guys, Jack and Ryan that is, manage a couple of rounds
😄It is Ricky’s fault that I went back and edited to take Goffin deep, but I quickly go for Goffin. Ricky, too, as I recall.
Fritz is not beating Rafa. I don’t see Fritz beating FAA either.
Is anyone interested in seeing full bracket WTA picks?
I’ve done mine. Iga all the way. Dunno about other finalist tho. Ons is so injury prone, would be picking her but?
Hoping Petra does well after winning Eastbourne.
I have given up rooting for her, much as I like her, because things always go wrong..
An Iga/ Ons final would be awesome..
Petra Kvitova looked particularly elegant while handing last year’s champion Ostapenko a defeat. I hope Kvitty can keep that form through two more weeks! 🤗
I love watching Ostapenko when she is blasting the tennis ball. I’d like to see Iga vs. Ostapenko.
I have Iga too but my other finalist is maybe a surprise though grass is her surface. The women’s is so unpredictable these days
No time to be mysterious, Big Al. I will have to wait and see how you and Margot picked and then ask myself, why did I not think of her.
Petra Kvitova is my choice, or Beatrice Haddad Maia. Also, Iga, Ons, Halep, Muguruza, Bencic, Gauff, and at least 20 others are on a list down to where Kontaveit and Krejcikova are, I count.
None of them ! Ill leave you to find out. As you say many candidates for that finalist spot and all risky .Even Iga is risky on grass.
In the mens, Ive taken a chance on Ole Nick – given he retires injured a lot (apart from the other stuff). But I think he a good chance over Tsitsi at least.
🧐 for keeping your WTA finalist choice a big secret.
Yes, on Ole Nick over Tsitsipas.
Big Al,
You copied my Ostapenko finalist pick, I see. Jelena O. is the most entertaining woman on tour, with the eyes rolling and pulling the faces she does. Also significant is how she goes for her shots. I picked her for the final because I want to watch as many of her matches as possible!
Don’t see Sinner beating Alcaraz either, although Djoker would win easily over either. Rafa’s not gonna lose to Fritz unless he cracks another rib!
Elizabeth : clue : She has at least one Slam title
Wow, at least one slam, you say. 🤗 You didn’t pick Serena, did you? Before Wimbledon starts is the most exciting time, only hours to go before my masterpiece brackets turn red.
‘
Ostapenko.I see you mentioned her as a finalist also .Did you pick her?
Hubie out? Disaster
The key is to survive the first week. Not good to have Cilic in the fourth round, but he has to get there. I try not to worry until it actually happens. Rafa says he does not have the pain and isn’t limping. If he can get through the early round matches and get comfortable on grass, he has a good chance.
I am happy he is playing Wimbledon!
Djokovic dominated the first part of the season last year, but he’s been on the decline since then.
He failed to win a medal in Tokyo, then lost to Medvedev in straight sets at USO, got kicked out of Australia, and dumped out of RG by Nadal.
I’m not sure he should be the clear favourite for Wimbledon this time.
Didn’t know that Serena named her dog after Rafa!!😀😀 🐕🐕🐕
Nolefarm is having a meltdown over this too as Serena said she always loved rafa ..they are saying she was team Djokovic .
Nolefarm..just accept it people rafa is way more popular amongst tennis players n esp women tennis players. Don’t get offended for each and everything.
Nole Farm seen to have become completely unhinged in relation to Rafa. They post about him and his astonishingly evil ways😂 more than they post about Novak.
Serena is always a Nadal fan.. Only her ex coach is Nole fan and keep making sarcasting comments against Rafa. John Mac was Nadal fan until 2010. After that he completely turned against him and became hardcore Nole fan
Serena said she was team Djokovic when they asked her if she supported Djokovic’s gripe with the ATP.
Oh my gosh!! 🤣🤣 Guess what, I named my cat Carlos thinking it was male only to find out it’s female 🤪 but she already answers to Carlos so that’s that 🤣😂. She is seven weeks old and is a little terror!!! I can’t understand how she’s female
Did you name her after Alcaraz Mona?!!
If so, that is very suspicious!😀😀😀
Yes I did!! 🤣 at the time the hype was not so extreme!
Gosh Mona!!😀😀
I shall be examining your comments for bias towards Carlos in future!😀😂
Teehee!! I won’t any of my pets Rafa though 😄
But you don’t have to worry about my support for Carlos, no one will dig any into Rafa”s support 😄
By Nole Farm obviously I don’t mean Elizabeth or Pat Lemon. Just the fanatics on twitter and you know where.😉
I love reading this fiction.
Who even talks like this. Words like revenge. He is so obsessed .it will be his downfall..revenge means he is sure he will win over rafa here. Don’t be so sure Novak. This is rafas redemption year. He may steal this crown from u in the final n then you can cry all your life for losing the slam race
https://mobile.twitter.com/iMojahedi/status/1541175113714143232
Sanju that was quite shameful to hear but not surprising. Nadal or federer doesn’t even talk like that. Revenge in Paris? Pound for pound he’s nowhere near Rafa in Roland garros if Rafa is fully healthy. The air of entitlement and superiority he carries is sad. Like it’s his birthright. If it’s Australian open, I can understand bc he’s phenomenal there but at the French? He’s delusional.
I am not thinking about Rafa getting to the final. I’m glad he avoided kygrios. He’s the worst opponent for Rafa on grass apart from federer and Djokovic. Rafa should just play his game and forget about Djokovic’s “revenge” and any talk about calendar grandslam. Such pressure can be paralyzing, we saw what such pressure did to Djokovic last year and serena in 2015.
Rafa just stay healthy and fit which is of utmost importance and play your game. You have nothing to prove to anyone. You have gone through hell and back. Be focused and ignore the nonsense from Djokovic.
What I am worried about is rafa’s serve. It’s still mediocre to put it mildly and he needs to improve it significantly if not he won’t go far in this Wimbledon. The foot is ok and I really really hope it stays ok. Rafa should be careful about his movement, he’s moving well on grass but please avoid slipping on the grass or falling down esp bc of his foot. Remember what happened to zverev, on grass it’s even worse bc of the slippery surface. He needs to improve his return of serve esp with big servers on grass if not we are headed for many tiebreaks where the big servers have an advantage. His net game is flawless so he should incorporate a lot more serve and volley. And please please, NEVER AGAIN lose your serve when serving for the set or match or up a mini break in the tiebreak or after breaking your opponents serve; that terrible habit has to disappear quickly bc on grass in Wimbledon it will be beyond disastrous and he will lose the match with those hiccups.
Finally, I know it’s really difficult for him but he should try his possible best in speeding up the time he takes between points bc I am a bit concerned that they will really punish him esp in Wimbledon if he continues being slow.
Vamos Rafa. Go do your thing and let the haters keep on hating 😉😁
I said on another thread I was worried about Rafa’s serve.
It was a liability at times at RG with his first serve sometimes going AWOL.
He has to serve better on grass.
If nothing else, he exhausts himself when he has to keep serving twice every point with all the time he takes as well. It’s also true that the British commentators are annoyingly obsessed with the serve clock. They go on and on and on about it..😠
Why do I get the feeling happy that u feel rafa wont go far in wimby ?
I on the other hand feel the momentum may just carry him through. He seems relaxed and at ease and surely faces no pressure in wimby ..the calendar slam thingy will play in newyork if he wins here.
Why is anyone surprised at this comment from Novak? It’s who he is. Of course he will say it out loud. Rafa could care less. He doesn’t do revenge. He plays for the love of the sport.
I honestly don’t know what to expect from Rafa. His draw could open up. That has happened before. I am just really happy that he is playing. Thanks to that treatment for the foot. If the foot holds up then it’s about feeling good on the grass. I don’t see pressure for Rafa. He has overcome obstacles at both the AO and at RG. I think it’s more on Novak since he has not won a slam. He is the one obsessed with revenge. Too bad on him.
Just for Rafa fans, John Lloyd said Rafa’s RG slams were “the greatest individual achievement in sport.”
For those who don’t know him, now a commentator, back in the day a tennis player himself.
Most famous for being married to Chrissie Evert…
😉
margot,
Thanks for that. I just wanted you to know that I still miss ed.I think about her especially with the year that Rafa is having. She would have loved it. One of the nicest, most decent person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing on a forum.
I actually went to stay with her about 5 or 6 years ago. An act of faith on both our parts!
I wish that I could have relayed a message through you.. I am glad that you got the chance to stay with her. I don’t talk about it here, but it was very upsetting to me, she was the first person I connected with on Tennis Talk back in the day. She was intelligent, articulate, gracious and kind.
A very special person. Someone I would like to have met in person. It’s interesting how we can get to be good friends without ever meeting. I am just so glad that I knew her on these forums far as long as I did.
NNY, I also don’t have the foggiest idea what to expect from Rafa. If he survives the first few rounds, he might find his groove and go far. We all know that he can play excellent grass tennis. But I also would not be surprised if he goes out early. We have to wait and see. But I think it is highly improbable that he will win the whole thing! As to beating Novak in the final – it’s a wonderful dream for all rafafans, but IMO the chances are slim to none. Even if Rafa makes it into the final – Novak has been the most successful player of the last decade on grass, and Rafa has not beaten Novak on anything other than clay since 2013, if I remember correctly! And if Novak makes it into the final, this means that he will have also found his groove, and as far as we know Novak has no health problems!
Rafa has already achieved the seemingly impossible this year. But I do not expect that this will go on indefinitely – unless a clever engineer has connected Rafa’s ’22 season with one of those advanced space ships which use the infinite improbability drive in order to travel faster than light. How this works has been explained by Douglas Adams, and I will happily eat many crow cakes if I’m wrong about Rafa. I have been wrong many times… 😉
Rafa is second on centre tomorrow after Iga’s match.
if rafa reaches week 2, only Novak can beat him
Just heard Cilic has pulled out. Another one I had going deep. Jeepers Creepers.
Was just going to post he is out! Replaced by a lucky loser..
How far did you have him go? Sean on Tennis x in his preview had him beating Rafa..
Apparently he has covid…
So Hubi is out..
I thought he would go out early…he was the one I wanted Rafa to get in the quarters because I thought he wouldn’t get there. I did write this to Al yesterday…
Ah, I thought cilic could be a real dark horse! Hope he gets well soon.
IF Rafa manages to win Wimby u will hear the asterisk pushers: oh well field was depleted so Wimby win is not a real win just like AO!
If Novak manages to win Wimby u will hear Nole farm: oh how great thou art, the best grass court player of all time!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I am sure I’m not exaggerating here! Someone, plz, where is the lie?
Hello guys!! Hope all’s well! Not 100% but at least there’s tennis to keep my chin up.
How many have fallen on the way side on day one and some highlights:
#1: Nole was taken to 4 sets
#2: Hurhacz who was expected to go deep lost in 5
#3: Alcaraz was taken to 5 in a hard fought match but perhaps is good for him since he did not play any lead up tourneys but interestingly was nursing an elbow injury 🤪
#4: Murray lost first set but up with break in second
#5: Stan lost first set but won second, however match with Sinner look very competitive
#6: Rosol lost in a five setter
Can’t wait to c my Rafa tomorrow!! He looks so lovely in white 🤗😃
LOL. ‘Highlights’ for tennis fans. Can I add Dustin Brown isnt there this year?
He looks even lovelier with his dreadlocks 🙂
Al, yes Dustin Brown’s looks are really special. Too bad, that never managed to climb into the higher ranks, since he only excelled on grass 😞
Thanks for the update. A lot has happened since I last checked in. I saw the last two sets of Alcaraz and Struff. Getting pushed by a guy ranked 155?
So Cilic withdrew because of Covid. Hmmm. It seems like Rafa’s draw just opened up a bit. You just never know.
Hurkacz was a surprise since he won Halle, but these young guys seem to have a problem with consistency and showing up at slams. I believe he was knocked out early at the AO. I think he was a possible early round opponent for Rafa there.
Hurkacz has a great game for grass and did well last Wimbledon. He wasnt in good form earlier this year. Davidovich is a really good player .
NNY, Struff is an excellent player! He has such a low rank because he was injured for a while. In Germany he used to be the second in command behind Zverev. Before the match against Alcaraz he promised to fight until the very end, and he kept his word. Good for Alcaraz, though, that he managed to overcome this first difficult hurdle. Many of the previous generation of highly praised young guns used to exit the slams early and often against low-ranked players. They had not learned to motivate themselves when they did not play against top players, and they could not handle best-of-five matches. Right now we still need to see how Alcaraz will handle Wimby, but unlike Huge Hubert he made it into the second round!
This year’s Wimby is getting crazier and crazier! Has there ever been a year with such a depleted field??? Cilic has won a slam already, and he has already been in a Wimby final, and he played well lately. He wasn’t even a dark horse!
Well I didn’t see the match, so I will have to take your word for it. Davidovich is a good player. I do agree with that. Hurkacz beat Meddy at Halle. So he obviously has the game for grass. I just think that some of these young guys are not ready in the first round of a slam if they get a tough opponent.
Slams are a lot different than tournaments like Halle. But this is a learning experience and I expect him to gain experience.
Well he did well last Wimby. But then so did Shapo and never one to bet my house on.But it’s not unusual for even the great players to be taken to five in round 1 or go out early at Wimby.
Yes, that is true.
Yes, Rafa is playing an unknown today, well someone I’ve never heard of. Hope Rafa plays well today and give me no panic attack! 😄
Not many great matches today but Kyrios is playing today. Didn’t realize Lopez was still playing tennis, lol!
Just learned that Berrettini is out, too, because of Corona 😞
Oooooh!!!! Yes, Covid is rampant I hear in UK!!! Dimi too sustained groin injury after going up a set! Sad, he was playing well. This can happen so easily to anyone!!
I heard that Berrettini also has Covid19 and has to withdraw. My goodness, why is the virus spreading among the players?
I hope the players do wear masks when they’re moving around and especially when in the locker room. I hope Rafa is fine ( and not only him but all the other players too!).
We posted this at the same time! This year’s Wimby is spooky, to sa the least! Berrettiniwas doing so well…
If Rafa gets to the second week, he is reaching the final. I like his chances.v
I agree
VR,
I was wondering where you were. Lucky, too. Both of you are here!
I be’eve that getting through the first week is the key. Rafa needs to get his grass game back after 3 years. It showed in the match with Cerendolo. Is that his name? Rafa needed some time on the court and this guy at least made the effort to do his best.
The ESPN commies are all praising Novak to the heavens for his one sided victory over Kokkinakis! LOL! Oh yes what a great accomplishment. They are acting like Novak winning is a done deal.
Rafa is going to have something to say about that!
Oh no! Not the handsome hunk! Who will be next?
Dimi!
Cilic out, berretini out. Virus striked again. Both Rafa and Novak have practiced with these guys. Hoping no more withdrawals from the tournament due to the infection
Rafa can go deep here but i would give novak the biggest chance to win wimbledon again.
Vrael, I agree! Novak still has the biggest chance to win another Wimby title, and his draw isn’t exactly aw-inspiring and one serious contender- Huge Hubert – is out already.
The bottom draw looked a lot more challenging – but that has slightly changed after Cilic and Berrettini dropped out with
a Covid infection! Maybe, the virus is nore challenging than any individual player. Rafa and Novak practiced with Cilic btw…
The gorgeous Matteo is out! Am sorry because I really like him.
Am getting worried for Rafa now. Hope he is being careful because this is clearly spreading through the players and others will probably go out.
I was thinking only yesterday that people were being way too casual and assuming they were safe when in fact it was estimated 1 in 7 people in the UK last week had covid! It’s rampant here again. I am very very careful and avoid public places.
I hope Rafa stays in his own group and they are all very careful. Being vaccinated won’t protect you from new variants.
Wondering if players got it at Queens. Both Gorgeous and Cilic played there. We had the same super spreader event in Abu Dhabi when loads of players got it before Xmas.
But Rafa was practising with Matteo and taking selfies a few days ago…
At least they were outside. It’s inside which is really dangerous.
Woah!! This is crazy but they must have been tested before start of play so they must have got it at Wimby!! This does not sound good, hope Rafa is ok.
Meanwhile, the curious case of Kyrios! He’s been mumbling throughout his match, complaining about e v e r y t h i n g!! Sigh!
Rafa has a lot of people with him as several of his friends are with him. I really hope that they are not out seeing the sights. London has been the epi centre for covid since the beginning so the prevalence there must be very high.
Time to go back to wearing masks and staying in bubbles.
Otherwise it’s very high risk.
Mona, there is no mandatory testing at wimby. They may well have got it at Queens.
I’m watching tennis on a streaming site and the comments r hilarious!! They’re saying they’re sure Novak has Covid bcoz he was practicing with Cilic. So someone commented it’s not like they made out after practice!! 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 But someone also commented that Rafa also took selfie with Mateo so who knows what happens in the next few days! I can’t c this ending well. 😞
This is crazy! Testing should be mandatory!!! If a player has only mild symptoms, he or she might decide not to get tested in order to stay in the tournament. I have encountered exactly that behavior amongst people I know! They got mild symptoms but decided not to get tested because the didn’t want to jeopardise whatever they had planned for the upcoming weeks…
It seems Matteo withdrew so as not to give the virus to others. Very admirable.
Cilic withdrew because he was too sick to play..
This is shocking. I just heard about Berrettini. It could be going around. Others could get it. I don’t know why they don’t have testing. People are getting careless.
RBA is out with covid!
Evidently more people will go out. It’s clearly circulating. Bad news…
I really hope Rafa and his team are being careful…I know Rafa is generally very careful in relation to covid..
That’s my bracket completely messed and no way of predicting it.
Fairly obvious there will be more people going out with covid.
They should change the tournament protocols.
Its happened to us all- RED, RED, RED! Impossible. I’m doing better with WTA, except for Sloane Stephens pick!
I see Nole says he will be Novax again at the US open
Yes. Means he can’t play in Canada, America and Asia. That’s the whole upcoming season bar the Paris masters.
NK to play Tsitsi next. Reckon NK wins that. He could go to the semis with Gorgeous out.
I still think that NK could win tournament out of nowhere..
