The rematch of an epic 2014 U.S. Open semifinal between Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori was no such thriller. Wawrinka’s backhand made sure of that.
It was a surprisingly routine but also a powerful performance by Wawrinka, who rolled over Nishikori 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday. The defending champion fired 46 winners in just three sets, doubling Nishikori’s count (23) and earning almost half of his total points (100) with winners.
As usual, the vaunted one-hander did most of the damage.
