Thiem withdraws from Wimbledon due to wrist injury

As expected, Dominic Thiem withdrew from Wimbledon on the heels of a freak wrist injury he sustained earlier this week at the Mallorca Championships.

Thiem made the announcement on Tuesday, two days after retiring from his opening match in Mallorca. The 27-year-old Austrian was leading Adrian Mannarino 5-2 in the first set but saw everything take an abrupt turn for the worse when he hit a forehand and felt pain in his right wrist.

After a Wednesday MRI in Mallorca was inconclusive, Thiem traveled to Barcelona for a second opinion. A specialist confirmed that the world No. 5 has a “detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist,” which will sideline him for a month and maybe longer. In addition to Wimbledon, Thiem will also miss clay-court tournaments in Hamburg and Gstaad.

“I’m going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible,” the 2020 U.S. Open champion wrote on social media. “They’ve informed me that I might be out for several weeks, but I will do my best to be back on court soon. I’m really sorry for pulling out of the upcoming three tournaments I had in my calendar: Wimbledon, Hamburg and Gstaad. They are very important tournaments for me.

“I appreciate all the support from the fans in these difficult moments — I’m determined to come back stronger.”

Other players who have withdrawn from Wimbledon are Rafael Nadal, David Goffin, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, and Borna Coric. A lucky loser will replace Thiem in the main draw because qualifying is already underway–and will end on Thursday.

The draw ceremony is scheduled for Friday at 10:00 am in London.

    • M…I’m sorry to hear about Thiem…I know u like him very much!..

It was very unfortunate for him to get the worst injury for a tennis player when his career at the best atm…I hope he will recover as soon as possible M!

      • Thank you darling. Delicious Dom’s has had a disappointing time since that slam.
And wrists don’t get better quickly. 🙁

        • Ohh yes M!..It’s soo true!..Not only don’t get better quickly..but it also will give a real challenge to him when he’s ready to play again…the fear & self belief will be tested…I am so sympathize with him M….He’s such a talent & a joy to watch!

Btw…It’s great to see Andy back M!…I certainly will pick him over Niko!..😁

          • Yeah M!…I’ve got no expectations from Andy too!..but,i still picked him to 3rd round😃…but i think the young energy in Otte/Rinderknech can give him some trouble too!..I hope Andy will proves me wrong M!…Hip hip hooray to Andy!

P/s..It’s great to c Andy is picked to Olympic too M!…To the dismay of Cam Norrie!..heh heh

          • I didn’t know he injured his wrist. If he was depressed before, nothing like an injured wrist to bring him down. I can just see him hitting his million-dollar one-handed backhand, and turning his wrist as he goes. It’s a spectacular shot! Poor Dominic, hope it doesn’t take too long to get back to the tour.

          • Oh yes RC!…That’s y i feel so sorry for Dominic!..It’s sounds like a serious one(tho i hope not!)…His physio said when u heard a crack..it was never a good sign..In my mind,i’m thinking, how that delicious one handed backhand can be impacted with this injury?Hope it’s not as bad as we think…

  1. AM: Cam didn’t want to go to the Olympics. Said he wants to improve his ranking. Can’t think Andy would’ve been picked ahead of him TBH

    • M…the other day i read that some peoples(some players maybe or i was wrong?) critized Andy for been selected for Olympic bcoz of his ranking..and forced Andy to explain the decision on twitter..right?
