  1. I do not suddenly think that Fed must retire. I think he can play next season as well, which probably should be his last season. I guess right now Masters are more difficult for him to win, because of the schedule and less time of rest. He still can qualify up to quarters/semis in slams and as being a Top 5 player at this age is quite impressive.
Roger was not himself in that final. I think it’s very important to keep on playing if he wants to stay competitive. Taking long breaks can be as detrimental as overplaying. I guess this part of the season will clear things up. I’m sure he will win titles and will want to play RG for the last time.

    • With all the time for training and rest, he’s still not playing up to par tennis. He’s making so many uncharacteristic UEs, got hesitant and it’s as if he ran out of ideas how to make changes or adjustments during his match(es).

He’s fortunate that Stan let him off with his own errors (and Stan himself was still in his comeback stage) and Goffin injured his shoulder in the SF.

Fed’s ROS was horrible in the final, failing to adjust his court position when returning when he obviously was struggling to return Djoko’s serves. He was rallying with Djoko from the baseline and only tried to come forward to the net when he’s about to lose the match and he’s making all sorts of errors in his volleying etc as if he hasn’t been training during his time off the tour.

I really doubt Fed will play well at the USO; Fed is looking more and more his age and I’m not sure BO5 matches will help him.

      • True. But for sure he knows the reasons best. He might not win another GS, although I thinks that’s not impossible for a man who has done it for 20 times. I am sure it depends on his willingness and pelasure to at… Only then he can a analyse wjat went wrong, what has to be worked on.
I felt like he better lost to someone earlier-Stan, and let the final be more competitive. With that game any top 50 player would have made that match close.
But let’s not underestimate his capacity to come back strong. He might not win USO,but to many people write him off far too easy. Can’t wait for the draw, especially with Stan, Djoko, Raonic relatively back on track.

    • Federer will do as he jolly well pleases. He doesn’t owe anyone anything. Few players have gone out on top as Sampras did – and Sampras has some regrets about that. Losing in a Masters final – or three – is not exactly an embarrassment.

      • Of course it’s not an embarrassment. I was upset about the way he lost more than about his defeat. I hope he finds again the enthusiasm and pleasure to play. He can do very well at USO if he manages to serve and return well.

          • Yes, of course. But I’m also a Big Four + Stan + Delpo fan. I like to see all of them doing well and playing great tennis against each other.

          • I am glad to know that. I like to follow them too and appreciate the uniqueness each one of them is gifted.
The reason I’m asking is that most Rafans don’t like Fed or are neutral; and you seem to care 🙂 This is also valid about fedfans’ attitude towards Rafa. No distinction made, to be clear. I also think this place is decent and has a relatively healthy atmosphere.

          • Federer’s tennis is awesome to watch – this should go without saying.

May not have been his perfect level vs Nole but there were plenty of great shots from both players and it was a very high level match in my opinion. Both had more UEs than winners but that’s going to be part of attacking tennis on fast-paced hard courts like Cincy with two guys like that when the margins are smaller.

It’s very impressive what he can do at 37 and everyone seems to forget that Federer played in two matches (as did Nole) the day before. That’s pretty tough when you factor in the warm-ups and cool downs.

            Give the guy a break.

On the other hand, you don’t usually see Federer’s negative side because he’s rarely in a losing position but it usually shows more often than not when he is. He was very condescending towards the umpire, for someone who wins that award every year.

I think Nole is playing at a very high level to win Wimby (especially that SF vs Rafa) and to win Cincy for the first time in his career.

Fed will very likely go deep at the USO. He’ll have evening matches. I’d be very surprised if he loses before the semis as Nole and most likely Delpo will be in Rafa’s half and Fed will likely avoid Cilic, Anderson, Kyrgios or Wawrinka in his quarter.

Isner and Raonic will probably be in Rafa’s quarter (if not Nole’s).

But I’m a huge fan of Federer’s tennis. It’s insane! You’ll rarely (if ever) see me criticize his game (unlike several Federer fans here that criticize Rafa’s skills).

I will however criticize the favouritism he gets and resultant lack of respect that his rivals get from fans and tournaments alike.

For example, in the final, Nole fans were in the minority by far but they made a lot of noise cheering. But I never heard them cheer double faults the way the rest of the crowd did with Nole (also loudly cheered his time violation).

  2. You forget Delpo was in Fed’s quarter of the draw at last year’s USO. Fed and Rafa were also in the same half. So, no, I dont think Fed will get an easy draw at the USO.

I disagree that Fed was playing at a high level; he barely survived against Stan and its Cincy quick HC where he had the adv over Stan.

If you take into consideration his age then maybe you can say hes playing well for a 37 year old, however he’s certainly not playing at the level he did in the past.

As for Djoko, he did play very well in the final, probably helped also by Fed’s erratic play. He struggled through his matches vs Mannarino, Raonic and Cilic but not against Fed. So, he probably raised his level in the final, and Fed wasnt playing his usual net rushing game to take time away from Djoko, the success formula he used against Djoko at Cincy in the past; neither was Fed able to play like Cilic who tried blowing opponent off the court, nor was Fed able to sustain in long baseline rallies the way Rafa could against Djoko. IOWs, Fed was playing into the hands of Djoko and Djoko was the one dictating play.

Is this Djoko back to his almost invincible self again? I dont think so, judging from how he struggled through the draw. I think both Rafa and Stan coyld beat him, as long as they played like they did at Toronto and Cincy respectively.

I think Goffin, when hes fit and playing his aggressive game, taking the ball early and playing at his WTF level of last year, may stand a chance too.

    • If anything Delpo being in Fed’s quarter last year supports Hawks’ claim re the draw. Delpo was not in great shape going into the USO. If it had been the 3 set format some (hi Nole) want, he would have lost to Thiem in straights and Fed, even in less than great shape, would have had an easy win in the quarter.

      • Ramara, what about Rafa and Fed in the same half?? Do you think that’s easy draw for Fed??

Who else was tough draw for Fed last year? Djoko not there, Murray not there, Stan not there….. Cilic? After that forgettable Wimbledon final, you think he will be dangerous at USO?

Sasha is Sasha, as usual he didn’t make it far at the USO. So, basically there weren’t any tough draw for Fed, except Delpo and Rafa, the two USO champions.

        • Rafa? Um, well, actually going into the 2017 USO Rafa had lost to Fed three times in a row, in 2 easy sets in IW, 2 closer ones in Miami. But, the Fed/Rafa/Delpo section of the draw was certainly considered the more difficult half, especially after Murray pulled out, leaving a very unbalanced draw. Also Rafa did not do well in either Montreal or Cincy last year. He did not look like any kind of threat coming into the USO. If I were a conspiracy theorist (I’m so not!) I’d assume they plunked Fed into Rafa’s half hoping to get a Fedal match in the semis, figuring Rafa would not make the final.

          • Ramara, have you forgotten that Fed had his back issue that he had to skip Cincy last year? How then he would be the favourite if he were to face Rafa in the SF? So, Rafa wasn’t an easy draw for Fed, nor for anyone.

It’s all because of Murray’s last minute withdrawal that Fedal had to end up in the same half; and the fact that they did land in the same half with Delpo thrown in (and in Fed’s quarter) meant Fed wasn’t given an easy draw.

    • Nope, didn’t forget at all. Quite the contrary. That’s why I said he’s less likely to be there THIS year. His HC season wasn’t great last year so no surprise he was in Fed’s quarter LAST year. So, it’s either Zverev or Delpo in Fed’s half. I think he’d rather face Zverev given the choice. So edge to Delpo in Rafa’s half. In my opinion.

As for Cincy, you see it differently than I do is all.

I pretty much agree (as I usually do) with Tiggy’s take here…

      http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2018/08/novak-djokovic-roger-federer-cincinnati-masters-final-2018/76128/?utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referral

Several player can stand a chance – it is sport – but odds are (until something changes), it will be one of the Big 3 with Wawrinka and Murray still on the comeback trail. Those five have won 51 of the last 53 slams.

Maybe you forgot that Federer won the most recent hard court slam and Novak won Wimbledon with a very impressive high level match vs Rafa.

      • That was good from Tiggy. Thanks HawkFDT
Agree with him too – Rafa and Nole co-favorties. Just waiting for the draw now.

      • Fed won the last HC slam but that’s seven to eight months ago! Fed won Wimbledon last year but looked what happened at Wimbledon this year? He will probably reach the QF at New York, not unlike last year, when he also reached the final of Canada Masters.

As for Djoko, well Wimbledon isn’t New York. Djoko is 4/5 at Wimbledon but he’s 2/7 at New York. Was he playing at a higher level than his 2011-2015 level? Perhaps only higher than his 2014. He’s still good enough to get through the draw to reach the later rounds but it also depends on who he’s going to meet in the early rounds. An early meeting with Stan may spell trouble for him, as Stan, unlike all the others, doesn’t have any mental burdens when playing against Djoko.

PS. I think that Rafa will be tough to beat at the USO because 1) he’s the defending champion and certainly want to play well to defend his title; 2) he’s playing really well this season after his AO injury, won five titles in seven events played after the AO; 3) he’s eager to hold on to his no.1 ranking to finish the year as no.1 so he’s not going to let it slip away without fighting hard to protect it.

  3. Hi all hope your all well, big congrats to Novak and fans especially RC, on Novak winning Cincy and been the first player to complete the Masters sweep, never in doubt IMO 😉

Are you sayingthe draw will be fixed? You seem toknow exactly how it will pan out.

  5. Regardless of his less than amazing run last year, Nadal won the one that matters the USO, so i doubt he would really care, same with Novak losing at Queens, then he went on to win Wimbledon, tune ups are okay, but what the players really want are to win the GS ….

  6. Roger really is like a King! All hail King Roger!!!

“While most players, including Federer, usually enter the media interview room in some form of tennis attire, Federer in this instance wore a gray sports jacket over a white T-shirt. Be it in jacket or sweats, T-shirt or collar, he retained his title as tennis’ big man on campus.

A Federer press conference is like nothing in all of tennis. When you consider that Federer also plays tennis like no one in the sport’s history, it only makes sense that he would also communicate differently than anyone else.”

    http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2018/08/rogers-press-conferences-show-why-hes-king-both-and-court/76495/

    • Hmm. The author of the article is amazinlgy under-informed! He doesn’t know that Fed has a new clothing sponsor – UNIQLO – and he is wearing its gray jacket!
      The writer makes me laugh.

  7. Federer confirms the Weak Era existed pre-Rafa…

“I didn’t have a rival for a long period of time, and then Rafa came up and there was”

  8. Good article on conflict of interest and tennis favouritism none of which is necessarily Federer’s “fault” but points to what is wrong with tennis…

“Now, it’s one thing for tournaments to offer extra money to lure players to their events, but another to change the playing field to benefit a single competitor. This is what former Paris Masters chief Jean-François Caujolle sensationally admitted to in a recent interview with L’Equipe. Federer had not played in Paris-Bercy since 2003 and in an attempt to entice him back to the French capital at the end of the season, Caujolle essentially decided to completely change the surface upon the Swiss’ suggestion.”

And also the AO Tournament Director LITERALLY being on Federer’s payroll for his Laver Cup project is OTT…

“But to the same end, the players shouldn’t be paying tennis administrators, it simply creates a conflict of interest. This is where, I believe, Federer has crossed the line.”

    https://metro.co.uk/2018/11/21/roger-federer-does-get-special-treatment-but-has-it-crossed-the-line-8135898/

    • /sigh Yes, and that’s why I have come to believe that the sooner Federer retires the better it will be for tennis. It’s addicted to him. They’re going to have to get along without him sooner or later, and imo sooner is better. Power corrupts and Fed has too much power. It’s too true.

  9. Rewatched the match Federer – Djokovic at FO 2011. Amazing how fit Roger was, and his backhand very efficient against Djoko’s forehand bombs.

    • Fed’s BH against Djoko’s FH bombs? Do you mean Djoko’s BH bombs? Djoko’s FHDTL wasn’t/isn’t that lethal.

      • The most exciting clay matches often did involve Federer because of the way he plays . That year, it was even more impressive because of Djokovics dominance, including two wins over Nadal on clay.

    • Hawk, are you trying to be sarcastic?

Anyway, I find Tsitispas elegant too so it’s not that only Fed is elegant. Tsitsipas comes with a thinking game like Rafa’s too, so he’s unique, being able to have the qualities that Fedal have; no other player comes with that combination. Fedal themselves don’t have that too!

  10. I Dont mind Federer, but i think the whole world of tennis seems to fawn over him a bit too much, commies, fans, Virginia Wade, and Annabelle Croft, OMG practically have an orgasm talking about how wonderful he is and it makes me wanna puke, and his opponents never get credit for a win against him, preferential sheduling etc, not only that you here how not only is he the greatest tennis player ever, he has to be regarded as the greatest sportsman ever, completely OTT ….
