Rafa is not “only joking” nor “being polite when this week he said:
It was a strange situation that you couldn’t control; like respiration and time. When you don’t succeed to control these two things, when you do not know where the ball will bounce, it’s because mentally you are worried; that’s caused by anxiety. But I am world no. 5 and it’s not that bad.
‘When I fail normally, I accept it. When you have a mental problem; it’s not that you accept these situations less or in a worst way, but you can’t analyze these well, clearly. Every loss influenced me a lot; this year every failure was like three failures; and I had a lack of confidence.’
“Mental problems” is Rafa’s own words. Rafa speaks the truth (unlike extreme fans who don’t believe his own words) and have no original opinions.
Becker mentioned Federer, citing the Wimbledon 2001 fourth round where the Swiss beat Sampras in four sets. ‘People ask me if Federer would have been able to beat Sampras. They played against only time and Federer won, but Sampras already had his best moment. You have to take account that tennis begins with the only shot that does not depend by your opponent, the serve, and i thonk Pete Sampras has the best serve in the history’ – said Becker.
The German does not underestimate the fact that Federer won more Grand Slam titles (17) than anyone else. Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras are behind him with 14. ‘Federer is without any doubt the most successful player seeing the Grand Slams, and Jimmy Connors won more singles titles and fifth set matches’.
However according to Becker, the best Sampras would have beaten Federer and Connors: ‘But had they played against Sampras in Pete’s best moment, they would have been able to return his serve so good to win? I doubt it.’
Sad news for him and for tennis. Did he do the damage while practicising? It’s so rare for him to be injured apart from the back problem which flares up from time to time. Hope he recovers quickly. With Rafa still struggling to find his form, Andy distracted by impending fatherhood and now a hobbled Federer there’s nobody who can offer any resistance to Djokovic.
Poor Roger!
Hope it was a small tear, not a complete menisectomy.
I think he should avoid playing for next 03 months to give himself adequate rehab time!
Hope he plays more tournaments coming back from injury. He should try to play a little before the French. ?? why Roger why. So sad he is missing Dubai and Rotterdam. Now Nole for sure will win Dubai. I just hope he can have a speedy recovery and come back for IW though he should rush the recovery so he may come back later. If he isn’t ready for Indian wells then he should play Miami or a clay court event heading into FO. What worries me is that Stanimal is like 2300 points behind Roger so he may be able to snatch a top 3 spot before FO. Don’t think anyone could pass Roger for a number four spot if Stan passed him unless Rafa somehow won a bunch. Roger will probably be able to keep his ranking but still I’m sad he won’t play Dubai or Rotterdam and possibly other tournaments. And if Stan were to pass Roger chances are he wouldn’t stay there after the French unless he wins it again.
sad that fed is out injured. the atp is looking like a pretty barren place atm until rafa gets it together…
not looking forward to large doses of berdy and the usual get-so-far-but-no-further suspects..
well you did express your guess in very strong terms as to the lack of probability of his doing so..
am sure we all want him to come back and do great…i expect i was being somewhat over-optimistic at the time..
so did everyone. also move this discussion to the Del Potro article.
sorry, didn’t see it..will do so…
no i know you didn’t, because it wasn’t there yet! just saying to move it there now. thanks!!
He’s had his share of injuries. Just no surgeries so far.
Anyway, hoping for a speedy recovery. Literally anything could’ve triggered the injury and there are some reports over it happening while he was with the kids in a park.
If this was the case it’s particularly ironic he was playing with his kids and not knocking himself to piece against Nole. Really tough luck for him at the beginning of the season and with OG on the horizon.
They get people moving very quickly after this kind of minimally invasive procedure. Plus, Fed is a professional athlete who is already in great shape.
That picture was probably taken during an earlier training session with Pierre.
The practice one looks recent because he just released another small clip and wearing compression tights there as well.
It’s not a fast recovery actually and his knee will never be the same again. There’s a healthy knee and an operated knee. Having said that, it could’ve come at a much worse time.
Seriously, I follow Dolgo’s twitter and instagram. They do practice together when in Dubai. Looks like Fed’s wearing compression tights – matching color π
Wrong AT 5:15 PM. My comment doesn’t contain hawk’s beloved player.
Yes, your link shows that you are wrong again.
Fedfan is right – it was not always so! Time was when he looked like an uneasy teenager wearing an ‘off the peg’ Sunday Best suit.
Around the time he won Wimbledon however he found a bespoke tailor who perfected the cut for him and from then on he has upstaged Roger in the sartorial stakes. It helps he is so photogenic and a natural in front of the camera. Art directors love working with him.
Yeah that might explain why Fed earns the most off endorsements. Sorry even in that photo, Fed looks the best by far. No contest. Broad shoulders, perfect torso and perfect length on the legs. :p
Roger can wear a suit any how he likes. He’s secure enough not worry about the nitty-gritty. The lines of his body are still the best suited to carry off the material.

You seem to be disturbingly obsessed with my holidays. I guess being here 24×7 makes you feel “morally” obligated to keep an inventory of the posters. Or maybe you’re a closet fan of the guy that forms a part of my username. :p

In the second paragraph of my original comment at 1.05pm I said ‘since then (i.e. 2008) Rafa has upstaged Roger in the sartorial stakes’.
However there is a world of difference between ‘point and shoot’ shots, planned photo calls, and carefully staged shots for advertising/promotional work which have been retouched or photoshopped. imo one should compare like with like before being categorical about who looks better than the other.
Here is a classic example of the third category for a magazine editorial feature on Roger
Get the caption:
“It’s been an interesting few years, finding the style I prefer most. I realised I could use the elegance I have on court off the court too” {sic}
These words are attributed to him β I just hope he didn’t actually say that, but maybe he did!
Ed,
Yep, there is a big difference between Fed in pictures that are “carefully staged shots for advertising/promotional work which have been retouched or photoshopped” and Fed in other pictures.
Lol, the lengths to which Nadal fans go….
Fed in any picture looks great in formal wear. That’s why he gets to endorse luxury brands. There are so many of his pictures to choose from outside endorsements. And that is because he has both, the frame and the face for it. Nadal on the other hand, has bulky, slight shoulders that make him look shorter than Roger even though they’re listed of thr same height and hair that looks like it’s hanging on by a thread.:p

thanks augusta for the info!
I wish him all the best and fast recovery!
Stay well, Maestro!
Sad for him to miss Dubai- one of his most successful tourneys. Maybe he will add playing Miami or 1 clay master to make up the points.
Maybe it’s a silent ban…

Its about time.
or may play the last clay-court Masters 1000 as a warmup

Very common sports injury in hockey, football, etc.
I’ve had three such scopes with 4-6 week recovery. For him, no biggie other than the two lost tournaments.
I’m sure he will be good as old by Indian Wells no doubt.
Poor Roger!
Hope it was a small tear, not a complete menisectomy.
I think he should avoid playing for next 03 months to give himself adequate rehab time!
he’ll be out until the French probably
No
I just came on here to read the news about Fed. It’s surprising considering how injury free he’s been in his career. But he’s not getting any younger.
All one can do is wish him a speedy recovery.

In have seen Fed mostly in badly fitting suits in the pictures. For example (compare these men to each other):
http://the-slice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/atp-world-tour-finals-previews-20121103-141815-456.jpg
Nole looks the best.
And Fed hadn’t learned by then (2010) how to wear a suit jacket when sitting:
