Rafa knows what pro-Fed journalists/writers want to hear and he delights them. The journalists have kept asking and Rafa keeps answering the same. The journalists/writers get very excited about Rafa’s answers every time (billions of times!). Funny, no ? đ
What’s the deal with the Tennis World site? They’ve been running articles for days, implying Rafa faked his injury at AO and he constantly broke rules etc. Pure garbage stuff. Is that a Fedfan site as well?
HAPPY VALENTINES!!
JCKNY, I agree that people like to imply issues and therefore upset the players involved and mostly, their fans but I don’t really think it’s fair to falsely accuse Fedfans.
Thank God, though, the players are so used to this stuff that they don’t waste their time relating to it. JEALOUSY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME!!!
V A M O S R A F A!!!
NNY7: I checked the schedule and it looks like The Tennis Channel won’t be showing Rio until the Round of 16. They’re not showing the early matches of Dubai either. It’s always subject to change, of course. Hard to tell what they’ll be showing during “Center Court” where they skip around to events everywhere like they’re doing this week. But there’s not even a Center Court on the schedule until Friday. On Thursday, it shows that the Rio Round of 16 will be live….Dubai will be on a delay. Guess I’ll be watching Rafa’s early matches on a stream.
Do you know what time zone Rio is in? If the time is reasonable, then I will also see if I can try a stream online. I don’t want to wait until the round of 16. I forgot that for the smaller tournaments, the tennis channel doesn’t broadcast matches from the beginning.
I have zero expectations in Rio for Rafa beyond him getting a few matches in and testing his back. It’s a 500 tourny, points not to be sniffed at but he needs to make sure his back is 100% otherwise his season will be ruined.
NNY7: Rio is 6 hours ahead of us (us being West Coast). But I think they start their daylight savings time tomorrow which means it’ll be 7 hours. I’ll check again tomorrow. Thursday’s Tennis Channel shows a Pacific time of 2 pm and 4 pm for live matches, but that would translate, with a 7 hour difference, to 9pm and 11pm for the matches in Rio, which doesn’t seem likely. I’ll be rechecking every day as the matches get nearer.
NNY7: Sorry, forgot to add that the ESPN3 early matches start at 7 am Pacific Time for the day matches, then the evening matches start at 2 pm Pacific time. That still seems awfully late for the night matches. In any event, they’ll be on ESPN3.
Thanks for all the updates! I appreciate it. I am so happy to know that ESPN3 will carry the matches. Hopefully it will be a decent time for me to watch it online.
I thought Rafa would be accompanied by Roig to Rio but it looks like Uncle T amde the trip instead. Which is good, I think Uncle T also accompanied him to Vina del Mar, no? Makes sense since it is the first tourny after injury.
1. Rafa said Rio was hot, hotter than Australia.
2. Rafa trained with fellow Spaniard, Pere Riba. Rafa was rusty, Uncle Toni voiced his displeasure more than usual.
3. Rafa lost the practice set in a tie-break.
4. Riba said Rafa is not out of rhythm and is playing well.
Rafa has a pretty straight forward route to the final. Can’t see anyone in his half troubling him unless his back is still troubling him. Except to see a Ferru/Fog semi out of the bottom half, should be interesting if the Fog is interested.
Here’s a video of Rafa practicing yesterday. He’s not moving well. Hard to judge from just a few minutes of video, but it has me concerned. http://youtu.be/yFtoyNb9IcY
I’d say consider the fact that Rafa arrived in Rio in the morning and this practice video was taken during his first practice that very afternoon. Jet lag? That said, Rafa did say his back is not yet 100%, so could be that as well……………
âI spent some days resting at home and I hope my back injury is not going to be a problem to reach the final,â said Nadal who admitted before he left his back still was not at 100%. âI felt the back issue for the first time when I was warming up for the final. I canât predict the future, but I hope it is not a critical problem.â
After looking at the draw, I agree with you that there is no one in Rafa’s half of the draw that can trouble him unless the back is still an issue. That first video posted of his practice didn’t look very encouraging. But it’s good to know that he had a good practice session today.
Maybe Rafa had to work out some stiffness and kinks with the back, since this was the first time he is practicing again. One can feel some aches and pains at times when returning from a back injury. It’s to be expected when the body is pushed for the first time. The good sign is that Rafa had a better practice session. That means that he just needed to get himself going again and get his back used to playing.
I don’t think Rafa would risk reinjuring his back to play in Rio. He would only play if he is okay to do so. We know that there are a lot of important tournaments ahead for Rafa.
Not only did Rafa practice earlier today with Pico, but after they went to the soccer game, Rafa returned to the courts for a night practice. I saw a bit of footage from his practice with Pico and he looked better, although I didn’t see him serve. I’m thinking it’s a good sign that he’s feeling well enough to practice twice. Can’t find any reports from anyone that he looked sub-par either.
Rafa and Pico went to a soccer match at MaracanĂŁ, one of the most famous soccer stadiums in the world and stage for the World Cup 2014 final (June&July). Rafa was the guest of honor and he kicked off the match. It’s well known that Rafa is a big soccer (football) fan. In 2010 he attended the World Cup final in South Africa. https://twitter.com/augustazeight/status/435401425439305728/photo/1
NNY7: Nick Lester tweeted that Rafa’s first match is 9 pm local time on Tuesday. So for you and me, it’ll be 4 pm (Rio went back to Standard time today). ESPN3 will be showing both the day and night Rio matches. Yay!

Finally I can see Rafa play again! The Tennis channel has to be televising this, for sure.

NNY7: YAY!!! I just checked ESPN3 and they’ll be showing the Rio early matches online. Good, we won’t have to watch some funky unreliable stream.
NNY,
On the homepage of the Rio tournament there is a clock that shows the local time (scroll down a little bit):

NNY7: Sorry, forgot to add that the ESPN3 early matches start at 7 am Pacific Time for the day matches, then the evening matches start at 2 pm Pacific time. That still seems awfully late for the night matches. In any event, they’ll be on ESPN3.
NNY7: Good lord…one more update. Rio’s daylight savings actually ends tomorrow, so it’ll be a 5 hour difference, not a 6 or 7.
Jpacnw,
Thanks for all the updates! I appreciate it. I am so happy to know that ESPN3 will carry the matches. Hopefully it will be a decent time for me to watch it online.
augusta,
Many thanks for the link! đ

I can think of a few players who’ll be licking their chops if Rafa is wounded đ
Don’t worry ed251137, Rafa’s ready for the 2014 campaign, even if he does not snag the Rio trophy……..
Today, Rafa practiced with his friend Pico (Juan Monaco):
