Sinner out of Marseille, Tsitsipas withdraws from Acapulco

Not too surprisingly, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Open 13 prior to his first match. Sinner, whose February swing already includes a title in Montpellier and a runner-up performance in Rotterdam, pulled out of Marseille citing an illness.

Despite his haul of recent matches, the 12th-ranked Italian seemed on course to play in Marseille following his loss to Daniil Medvedev in the Rotterdam final.

Sinner waited all the way until Thursday, when he was scheduled to play his second-round match on the heels of an opening bye, but ultimately decided to take the week off.

Although a lucky loser could have taken Sinner’s place, not a single one stuck around in Marseille and therefore Arthur Fils got a free pass to the quarterfinals. Fils, who lost to Sinner two weeks ago in the Montpellier semis, will face Stan Wawrinka on Friday,

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from next week’s ATP 500 in Acapulco. Tsitsipas, who lost to Sinner in the Rotterdam second round, announced that he has been dealing with a shoulder injury since finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

“Mexico is one of my favorite destinations in the world, and I have always cherished the opportunity to compete in this prestigious tournament,” Tsitsipas posted on Instagram. “I am incredibly grateful for the support that I have received from the tennis people and the fans in Mexico over the past couple of years. Your unwavering support has been a tremendous source of inspiration and motivation for me, and I am truly thankful for all the encouragement and kindness that you have shown me.”

The third-ranked Greek fell to Cameron Norrie in the Acapulco semifinals last February.
