Jannik Sinner had been dealing with a right-hip injury throughout the Mutua Madrid Open and was unable to play his quarterfinal match against Felix Auger-Alissime on Friday.

“Very sad to have to withdraw from my next match here in Madrid,” Sinner wrote on Instagram. “My hip has been bothering me this week and has slowly been getting more painful. Taking the advice from the doctors we decided it’s best to not play further and make it worse.

“I’ll be doing some more tests in the coming days and follow the advice from the specialists on recovery. Thank you guys for all your support.”

The 22-year-old Italian is expected to get his hip checked out in Monte-Carlo before hopefully traveling to Rome for the next clay-court Masters 1000 event in front of his home crowd. Following two weeks in Rome and another for Geneva and Lyon, the French Open will begin on May 26.

Sinner is 28-2 this season and up to second in the rankings. If healthy, he has a good chance to reach No. 1 in the world for the first time after the French Open.
