San Diego SF preview and prediction: Ruud vs. Dimitrov

Casper Ruud, the No. 2 seed, continues his march in San Diego, as he takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals on Saturday.

Norwegian Casper Ruud is having the year of his career. He has an impressive 45-12 record on the season with 4 titles – and though they all came on clay, Ruud is no slouch on hard courts either. He had a disappointing second round loss at the U.S. Open but generally his summer hard court swing was successful, with quarterfinal showings in both Toronto and Cincinnati.

Success has been light on the ground for Grigor Dimitrov this year. The Bulgarian had a good run to the quarters at the Australian Open, but otherwise his results have been unimpressive. In fact, his semifinal run this week is the best result he’s had since Melbourne.

Dimitrov had a solid win over Aslan Karatsev to earn his semifinal berth, the same player who beat him at the Australian Open. But he runs into an in-form Casper Ruud on Saturday. Ruud upended Andy Murray and Lorenzo Sonego en route to the semis, both in straight sets. Dimitrov might make things competitive, but Ruud should come through to earn a spot in the finals.
